Too much trailer for a 2500?

Need help pricing trailer

See thats the thing I dont know what it is gonna weigh empty. The bare trailer is 5300+ whatever the living quarters add. The racecar is 1450 lbs. with the weight pretty much centered. ITs a little quad so about 350 lbs. all the tools and most spares will be on the pit kart which will be moved by man power so i guess it can't wiegh more than a thousand pounds. I don't know what size that trailer is in the picture but i do have a dwg. that the the center axle 14' from the rear of the trailer.

Is this trailer built already, or this is what you want to order? If it's already on a lot, I'd pass. It's to much trailer for your truck to safely handle. Do you need to have living quarters? You should measure your sprint car, quad, tool chest, and anything else to determine the minimum trailer length. Can you put a tire rack on the side walls of the trailer?



I deal with a lot of racers, and most of them have an 8. 5x24-26 enclosed trailer. A friend of mine has a 42' gn that we use to haul his off-road race truck. This is pushing the limit of his 1-ton. You'd be suprised at how much more we loaded into the trailer by the end of the race season, compared to the first weekend of racing.

Yes the mighty 2500 CTD will probably pull the load. Yes you will definitely be way over weight, especially over the rear axle. If you're even considering this, you better upgrade the tires to something like ricksons wheels and 19. 5 tires.



The truck may haul the load, but look at the maximum load rating of your stock tires. At best it will be about 6800lbs on the rear axle. Now take the rear axle weight of your truck. Add some for fuel, passengers, any gear you will haul in the truck, and then, finally, add the pin weight of the gooseneck or kingpin. I see a lot of threads about max loads, but not many that discuss the limiting factor... THE TIRES... :eek:
 
I've got a 36' 4 horse GN Trails West with change room, weight with our 4 horses and trailer right around 16000, haulin with a 97 2500 4x4, am lookin to sell this and upgrade to the 3500 though, but it pulls it fine, just got to have 5 miles to pass someone... lol... the 3500 would be more stable on the road... .

Kevin, is it going to be legal? No way. The pin weight will probably put you at or over the rear GAWR and possibly the tire ratings. You will be well beyond the GCVWR and GVW for your truck.



That said, I'd weigh the rig on an axle scale with it loaded in a typical fashion. If you aren't over the axle or tire ratings I'd probably pull it. However, I'd be darned carefull doing it, and I'd strongly suggest an exhaust brake to help keep your speed under control going down hill.



I'm not advocating that you do what I'd do, just giving you my opinion.



Oh, also I'd suggest keeping the speed down. All that weight will be pushing the tires to near their ratings. On a warm day you might have tire failure.
 
Well thank you all for you input. I just got the fax from the trailer company with my questions answed. 13,800 lbs. empty weight and 3200 lbs empty tounge weight is too much for me to want to worry about. I do apreciate all the input. Time to come back down to earth and get a smaller trailer.
 
I have got 2 brothers pulling 2 ea 44 foot Pace care trailers,3 axle,with 2500 Dodges,no problem,but if you should loose a rear tire on the truck,in a turn look out.

Yes and my 2001. 5 2500 4x4 is really a SRW 1 ton, because it came with the camper option! SNOKING

How can you tell if the truck came with the camper option?????



I swear my truck is a 1 ton, nothing makes it squat down.

Camper option = rear anti-sway bar and overload springs



Trailer tow option = hitch receiver and trailer wiring harness/7-pin connector

Well I could not find the part numbers, but the price is the same on the spring and aux overload. SNOKING

I did find out that the spring pack on the 2001. 5 2500 is a different part number than the 3500, 2500 is 52106016AG and 3500 is 52106017AG. SNOKING
