Anyone know why adding a bhaf would make the turbo bark easier? I can get it to bark just lifting lightly after 3/4 "throttle". Checked the shaft for play all lookes fine. Boost is normal for this truck (34#max) and runs fine. No kitty, but don't know what brand muffler is,it is not stock. Any ideas? Thanks. Dan

The idle is set to the low side of spec, I think it's just below 850 in drive with ac. It doesn't wait for the revs to come back down before I hear the whoosh whoosh whoosh sound. I'm really not sure if something is wrong, just seems to do it very easily now where it didn't before. It can't be good for it.

If you just went from the stock box to a BHAF what's going on is that you can now hear it better, it's probably been happening all along.

back pressure...?

I started noticing the infamous Whoosh Whoosh Whoosh from my turbo after I installed my engine mods and air filter.

It happens when I'm under good throttle and let off suddenly.

A mechanic said that it was back pressure on the turbo and that it wasn't hurting anything.

?

That "bark" is your waste gate closing. The first time I heard it close I thought something broke, but its normal. Have fun with it!

It's not the wastegate. When you are at high boost and suddenly let up on the throttle the compressed air filling your intake tubes and intercooler has no where to escape except to flow backwards though the turbo and air filter. Your turbo goes from 100,000+ rpms to reverse instantly. I've known of one turbo shaft that has snapped from barking, have heard of compressor fins getting bent and most often intake tubes, air filters and air filter seals being blown off. Avoid barking by letting off the throttle in steps or slowly at high boost, even 10 psi is enough to bark it.

DB Cooper... The DB Cooper who jumped out with the cash? Just go buy yourself a new 2003.

On the serious side though, I agree with Illflem. Try backing off the throttle slowly at high boost. That bark you hear is a complaint from your turbo and unless you like the sound of a new hybred... go easy.

Thanks for all of the replies. I could hear it bark before the BHAF, but it just seems way too easy now. This whole thing didn't really concern me much, but I thought I would bring it up to see if I was missing something. I try to let up slowly, but with our wonderful drivers on this side of the mountains sometimes it's not possible. We don't have bad traffic, we have LAME drivers. Anyhow, I have heard both ways that barking the turbo is or isn't bad for it. I tend to believe, as Bill said, that it can ruin your day. The physics just don't add up to no problems with stopping something from over 100,000 rpms to nothing and back up. That's if it doesn't reverse when all the air goes out the in pipe.

Paul, jumping out of a 727 over western Washington wasn't what I had planned and most of the money went into the Columbia when I lost my grip, so I need to keep my trusty '98 for a couple more years. :D

Note to the FBI, it's a JOKE, so quit calling me!!!

Turbo "bark" is not a good thing. Do not take what illflem say lightly, unless you want to upgrade you turbo because it blew up.

Bark Bark Bark!

To lesson the amount of turbo barking remove your silencer ring. It will not eliminate the barking but it will help:D

I know I'm in the wrong forum, but I have a few questions about this turbo bark issue too.

I'm trying to get an idea of what the turbo "bark" actually sounds like. Here's the deal: If I'm under pretty good throttle and let off, I get the woosh-woosh-woosh really fast for about 1 second. Now, a couple of weeks ago I was WOT from a stop and had to cut the throttle right at the 2-3 shift. The turbo let out a really loud BRRAAAAP!! and that was it. So, what's what? and what is bark?

Thanks,

Sean

Sean, the whoooshing sound is what I am refering to as "barking the turbo" As far as the braap, are you sure there wasn't a little ricer next to you at the time? Other than that, I have no idea what it would have been.

whoosh-whoosh-whoosh is what I get also. The BRRAAAAP!! might have been your air filter ripping in half;) If you bark it a lot it's a good idea to check your air filter often. Common thing that happens if you have a stock air box is it can dislodge the filter seal, you can be sucking dirt and not know it. Catch 22 here because it's also not good to be popping open the airbox unless you intend to service the filter.

Bill,

You bring up something I have wondered about. Why is it not good to open the AF box? Is it becasue one the AF is in for a while the seal molds to the box to form a better seal, and after popping it open it needs to "mold" again to be 100% effective?

Ryan you've got it right. The flimsy stock box leaves much to be desired as far as a straight flat surface and the rubber seal material on the filter is slow to recover to it's original shape. If you do remove your filter and don't replace it it's a good idea to use the same type of sealing grease used on K&Ns. Some folks recommend using it even on a new filter. If you reuse an old filter put it back in the same position it was before, not 180° rotated. If your box filter has been leaking around the edges you can usually find a dust trail on upper part of the air box.

Best way to check a box filter is to watch the filter minder and do the white rag wipe on the inside of the inlet tube to the turbo at every oil change. I've gone 88k on my box K&N without opening the box even once, no white rag dust, filter minder hasn't budged. I don't intend to open till 100k when it will get serviced.

My dog dont bark

My turbo never barks, I must not yet have enough mods... (tst #6,AFC kit)
