Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Untimely truck issues

It wasn't too bad, just time consuming. Sometimes it would be helpful to be double jointed and/or a bit smaller than 6' 275lbs. My timing pin was a bit stiff but after taking it out and removing the o-ring it worked smoothly. Is it necessary to replace the star clip or will the o-ring hold it in sufficiently? I figure if the o-ring prevents it from vibrating in against the gear it should prevent it from falling out too. Once the timing pin in the gear case was aligned the pump pin lined up perfectly too.

The plan is to take it to a local shop for rebuilding on Monday. Since I am not intending on doing any extreme bombing I am just going for a plain rebuild and adding a plate and 3K GSK later as I can afford it. It is more important to me at this time to at least get it on the road.

Hopefully the install will be as uneventful as the removal.

Since your having it rebuilt have them tune it some. Have them rebuild it to the 215 pump fuel flow specs. Or if ya feel brave maybe alil more then the 215 fuel specs.

Never hurts to get alil free HP.

What is the difference between a 180 and 215hp pump? I figured it was delivery valves at the very least. I am working on a beer budget, can't have champagne tastes right now. How would 180hp injectors work with a 215hp pump? I can't afford to upgrade injectors right now either. I don't even know if the shop I am going to get the work done at offers any performance enhancements. I have heard good things from several people about their work but I haven't asked whether they do performance upgrades since I'm not particularly interested at this time. Just gotta get it running.

I ain't sure how much abuse my gas ZF transmission will take either. The last thing I need is transmission problems. I ain't a HP junky so I thought I could achieve around 250hp/600tq with a plate and 3K GSK in the 180 pump. Even this will exceed the ZF rating by 180ft/lb or torque. The diesel version is rated at 480 but I'm not sure what the difference is between the gas and the diesel versions other than gear ratios and front case half. I am going to slip some synthetic oil in there as soon as possible.

Delivery valves are actually the same between the 180 and 215. I wouldn't worry about the 180 injectors, they will be fine with some extra fuel.

The 180 is a good pump IMHO and is very capable of producing some good HP numbers. I agree I would have the pump shop calibrate it and bump up the fuel output a bit. You do not need to get crazy if you are concerned with your drivetrain, nor do I think the average shop would bump up the output enough to get too concernd about. I would just mention to them you are looking for a little extra HP, I'm sure they can take care of that.

DPinkston just curious why you pulled your pump and are getting it serviced. I'm pulling mine soon because of drivability issues (slight miss) and mileage (366K). Let me know how it works out once you get it back on.

I got the engine out of a wrecked truck. The battery(s) had busted and got acid on the engine. I washed it off as soon as I got it but I guess the damage had already occured. My guess is it weakened the wall of a delivery valve barrel but it didn't split right away. The engine only ran a total of about 15 minutes before it happened.

The best time to buy something is when you don't need it right away. If I hadn't been under such pressure to get my truck running as soon as possible I would have passed on this engine. My haste got me nothing but extra headaches and bills as you notice that it still ain't running.

Most pump shops that shouldn't be a problem for them to turn it up alil. Injection pumps aren't quite just a slap together affair. They should put it on a test stand and check the fuel output and do adjustments. Least thats what the injection pump place I worked at did. So cranking alil more fuel outta your pump wont cost you anything (or it shouldn't anyway).

I know if mine ever needs a rebuild it's getting tweaked.

Just curious what the pump shop said about replacing the barrel. I was under the impression that plungers and barrels were meant to be sold and replaced in matched sets of 6. Maybe that was bad info  Thanks

God I hope not. When I talked to Piers they didn't mention anything about having to replace as a set, he said he may have some good used ones laying around. Of course "some" could have meant a whole set. On a very tight budget here. The shop I'm having the work done at didn't comment when I told them what I expected the problem was. I will have them call me with an estimate when they get a good idea of what needs to be done.

Got my pump back today. Ransom paid was $1328. Had to replace a plunger and barrel and other assorted small expensive parts. I asked them to turn it up and they said there's only so much the smog nazis will allow them to do to it, but they will tweak it what they can. Gonna install tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Danny

So they were able to replace just one P & B? I hope they were able to turn it up enough that you are able to feel a little extra HP.
