Looks like valve springs will need to be put on my list. I have to wonder if this valve bumping the piston happened off the line at a sled pull when you're bringing the engine rpm up slowly realeasing the clutch slipping it building boost and trying to get max rpm before you let the clutch go. I'm trying to understand at what moment in the piston cycle this would be most likely to happen, keep in mind there are enormous amounts of cylinder pressure pushing against the valve. Even on the exhaust stroke with 50 lbs of boost you would think there would be more force on the bottom of the valve holding it closed, unless it is a condition of valve bounce off the seat. Just thinking out loud.

Justin, how deep is the valve impression in the top of the piston?

Does anyone know what the factory valve to piston clearance is?

Gwoody,

When I pull you dont slowly raise the rpm's, its not like drag racing and buidling boost off the line.

The sled builds all the boost you want.

What you do is bring the rpm's up to where you want them then start releasing the clutch but still maintaining your rpm while getting the tires going and keeping the turbo lit up.

I am sure the high rpm's and high boost is the main contributing factor along with weak factory valve springs.

They are so weak I can collapse them partially with my fingers.

Justin, you've got me scared to mod my 3rd gen now maybe I should have stayed with a 12 valve.

A 12V will do it too! I like the fact that Justin pulls the head to see what is going on in there. Next year I will pull mine also just to see what has happened in the last 30+K with the abuse I threw at it.

Justin is actually harder on his truck than I am on mine, my runs are short. There are people racing that talk about the damage they do in say 40-50 passes but they do say it on the open form.

F1 Helix Stage 2 w/springs... Don M

What made you decide to change cams, have you had any problems with the Scheid cam. How many miles do you have on the Scheid cam? Was the lift on the Scheid cam taller than a stock cam, if so how much?

Well I got around to removing the valves from the head... .

I had them inspected by a friend to check for damage from hitting the pistons like being bent or what not.

They came out great, no bends and no shaft damage.

Checked the valve face and 3 places on the shaft. :D

Wow... What a thread.

After my cam install, all the sled pulling, all the towing. . I think I will pull the head off this winter and give it a once over.

I would be willing to bet that I also have some valve contact. What lash were you running?
