I am considering a tool box to go across the bed of my truck behind the window. Is it true you have to get some sort of a bracket from dodge? Any installed a box without? Any issues? Thanks, Bill

There have been a lot of posts concerning this lately. I have a cross bed rail tool box (it uses "J" hooks to clamp it to the rails). It carries about 150-200 #'s of tools for the last 35,000 miles or so with no problems. I have it out from time to time to haul stuff and have seen NO cracking anywhere on the bed or rails.



I'm sure others will tell you how they have had all sorts of prblems, but I haven't had any

My truck developed slight cracking in the corners of the top bed rail before I ever put a box on it. That said, I've had a Weatherguard over the rail box on my truck over three years now and no problems because of it. It attaches to the bed rail wth J-hooks and is of superior quality and construction. I have thought about building a "headache rack" to incorporate along with the box to solidify things by tying the whole rear of the bed together and give me some solid tie-down points.

I got mine at lowes (kobalt brand), and I used some j-hooks I had here to mount it. it has been in 2 trucks now.



I also recommend the toolbox drawer lowes sells. it mounts tothe bottom of your existing toolbox, is lockable, and adds a ton of space for storage.



I like the kobalt ones cuz they seem to be made better. the ctd had a deezee box on it when I bought it, and it was a piece of crap... . not trashed bad, but the build quality sucked. Where mine is fully welded, it was only spot welded.



You are only supposed to mount the toolbox to the truck with one bolt on each side. this may be causing some problems if the toolbox adds too much stiffness to the bed.

The Mopar tool box comes with two large L brackets that are supposed to be rivited to the inside corners of the bed adjacent to the cab. Supposed to keep the bed from developing cracks in that area from hauling a heavy tool box around, as the bed is made of fairly light weight sheet metal. The Mopar box is held in place with j hooks.



I got the box as an incentive from Dodge when I bought the truck, and installed the brackets before I had the bed liner sprayed in.

Might consider a "fuel and tool" box sold at Camping World. Its a 50 gallon fuel tank and a tool box all in one. Lockable . around $450. bucks. easy mount to frame. Ive had mine for years and had it sprayed with my bed with "line x" black coating.

Tractor supply has boxes that sit on the bed floor instead of the rails. Might be a better option than taking a chance on the bed rails cracking. I have the 99gal L shaped tank with a box welded to it. It sits low enough that it does not interfere with the 5er.

Great! I've been looking for a stout tool box to replace my current box. The current one buckled under stress and twisted preventing me from closing the gullwing doors. Taylor Wing appears to be a quality product. Not cheap, but probably worth it. $110 extra to ship to california - OUCH!

I've been happy with my Weatherguard Box for the 3 years I've had it. Only problem I had was losing the key, which they shipped a new set for free to me. Was alot less impressed with the Delta box I had prior to it. The Weatherguard is an aluminum chest (sits on the bed) and the Delta went over the rails with the gull-wing doors (junk).
