Tool box

I have a long bed Dodge w/ a cross over tool box. Will I have to change to a in bed ( chest style ) tool box in order to clear a FW trailer? Or does it depend on the trailer - some clear, some don't?

It will depend on the trailer,BUT it better to be safe than sorry. I know of one owner who was sure it wasn't a clearance problem, but he ended up getting both corners on the front of the 5er repaired.

That's what I figured. It seems that some have a shorter noses than others. We're not sure what we're buying yet so I guess I'll have to wait unitll then.

I have a Husky chest box that sits up on the rails, about 4 inches over, and have not had any clearance issues at all with my Wildcat. Bruce

You might also consider a behind the hitch box. No more climbing into the bed to access the contents, plus leaves the front of the bed open for a fuel tank. I like mine, the companion box 1-800-toolbox. About $500 delivered to your door and very well made. I once supported the gooseneck of a 36ft horse trailer with front living quarters on a 18inch long 2 X 6 on the lid while I adjusted the trailers front leg length.

i have a long bed 4x4 ford and have a tool box that sets on the rails of the bed and no problem. but i just got a 2002 dodge and i'm not so sure. it depends how high your 5er rides above your bed normally. i have a reese hitch and it is ajustable. but... ..... even if it clears well on even ground you still hyave to watch it on uneven ground,especially when jacknifing robert

I have a low profile over the rail box (Truck Trunk by Creative Industries) and have never had a problem. My box only sticks up 3/4" above the rails. I didn't want a chest type box because I carry 4' x 8' sheets of wood in my truck a lot and they slide under my box.



If you have a tall box (3 or 4" above the rails), you may have a problem with certain parking or tight turning maneuvers even if you have an extended pin. It also depends on the clearance of your trailer to your truck bed. I'm right at 6" loaded.

I have the combo transfer tank/tool box p#91742. I just cut the tool box down to make it even with the side rails and have had no problems with the fifth wheel.

I also have a low profile box so I can still carry 8 ft lumber with the tailgate up. Mine sticks up about an inch. I did kiss the front corner of the trailer 1 time (very minor, just rubbed the fiberglass) but it was an extreme difference in angles between the truck and trailer and a tight uphill turn. My trailer goes off the pavement every time I use it, not sure what type of trailer you have but it would probably be fine with a low profile if you don't want a chest style box.

I don't want the chest box either,... but ya gotta do , what ya gotta do. Being the chest box is 60" wide, I was thunkin' of raising it a smidge at the corners so I too can carry 4'x8' sheets. Afterall, that's why I go long on my trucks!

The low profile boxes that JRMora and I are talking about are still over the rail crossbed boxes, they just don't stick more than an inch above the rails. I have about 7-8 inches between the bottom of my box and the bed. Just another option for you.
