I did a search on this, but was not able to narrow it down. Currently, I have all of my tools in a rollaway chest at my side job. The problem comes in when I'm working on the truck, car or boat at home and need something I forgot

I'm thinking of installing a large top chest (craftsman) in the bed of my truck. I have a cap on the bed. Aside from securing this to the truck, do you see any problems/have any thoughts?

I've thought of the weatherguard type boxes, but I need sliding drawers (lots of hand tools) and the idea of a utility bed (reading, etc) is a little too spendy right now. Plus, I have some money tied up in the cap & linex.

Figure someone else has dealt with this already :) Thanks in advance.

Tool Box

The only problem with a top box is that if you load it down very heavy at all the drawer carriers will eventually give way unless you get a REALLY expensive box that's made for mobile service. The service truck where I once worked went through 2 top boxes before they finally sprung for a Snap On that went for a little less than $800 and that was 20 years ago.

My topper has a side window that flips up. I built this rack that will hold two 24" Craftsmen Contractor boxes. They'll hold alot of tools, they're cheap, they're durable, and I can easily take them out for easier access or fewer trips to the truck.

Thanks for the quick reply BigPapa. I didn't think of that route. . good idea. How did you secure the rack & tool box? Bolted to the bed? I'd like to think the top chest would work for me as I'd be the only one in/out of it and don't think weight would be a problem.

How about condensation? I did see where Sears has boxes like yours. Although I don't have the flip up side window's, your set up looks good.

I see Springfield isn't too far from I-40. Any good campgrounds you could recommend in your area? I'm going to Dallas in September, looking for a Wal-mart or campground for a night.

Thanks again.

dzldpatriot,

The rack is made to fit under the lip of the bed rail and is secured on the bottom with self tapping screws. I use the heavy rubber straps to secure the boxes. I'd probably have to be in a roll-over for it to come loose even with out the screws. I haven't had a problem with condensation.

PM'd you on the camping.

Scott
