3. 54 is the highest ratio I've found from several vendors, Randy's included. this should add about 400 turns @ 60 to an already shortlegged truck. thank you for the welcome! 1989 d-350 ctd c/c 12ft. f/b pump work,st. pipe 470k. 1988

SGibson welcome to the board. What he means is set up your signature. If you go to "User Control Panel" at the top of the page then click on "Edit Profile" you will see a block that has "Signature" click on the little text box on the right side of the page and type in what you have for a truck, the mods you have done to it. That way it will show up every time you post without having to type it in.

Thanks for the input guy's and on the signature tip also, hope I got it right. 1 shows a 4. 10 the other just pro gears (too soft) for the 60 series but I'll call them mon.

3:07

I would be very pleased to find that I am completely wrong but If you find a source for the 3:07, I believe that you will have found the end of the rainbow. There are some used available from time to time that are on the TDR classified. But new???? Back in 81 when I was trying to get a Perkins operational in a Ford, I was also in search of the 3:07. While there is literature that indicates that these are available for Dana axles back before Dodges used them, I never found one.

Making a run of ring and pinions is a very involved manufacturing chore. Unless you have a customer who wants more than a 1000, it is not going to be profitable to set up the equipment required to turn them out. To my knowledge, Dodge is the only manufacturer who actually ever had the 3:07 in a truck. If enough people wanted to buy a 3:07, the parts could be turned out by several gear companys who have the capacity.

In my way of thinking, this would be best done for the Dana 80. This would offer the best of several possibilities. The additional capacity of the 80 is what the Cummins needed in the first place. Of course the ratio choice is also wrapped in the overall choice of how many gears, how stout to make the drive shaft, how stout to make the drive axles and other considerations of rpm and power transmission from the clutch to the wheels. In as much as the trucks are used in such a wide variety of applications and by individuals who apply their personal prefferences to the standard package, Dodge has setteled on the middle ground of 3:50 to 4:11 axle ratios. The ongoing move to more gears has now arrived at six, at least as an option, for the new model.

In discussions with Eaton engineers in 81 with regard to two speed axles for the "light" duty trucks, the comment was that the industry would be using eight speed trannys in a couple of years. Well I guess a couple of years have passed but no eight speed in the class of the Dodge trucks.

It has been my contention that the two speed is right for the heavier applications that the trucks are subjected to. At some point of transmission reduction, you have the capacity to twist the drive line from the truck just pulling off with the load unless you go to a drive line that is in the capacity of a Mack truck. The twospeed gets the reduction past the drive line and past the ring and pionion. Alas, most people who drive a two speed will crash it before they learn how to drive with it. It is also in the 5:75 range.

I expect that this is longer than allowed for a post now so will sign off.

When I bought my ctd it initially was going to be an engine&related hdwe. donor for a 75 D-600 crew-cab I had. That truck had a two speed 17k eaton and gears to make it work were an issue, I'd talked to a fella in penn. who had done it and w/10. 00 20's top speed was around 55, anyway I ended up keeping the little Dodge as a driver and selling the two ton. Now I'm looking at my 88 as a recipient but 435 is there and I' still have to swap gears... ... much nicer truck though.

In my checking around. The only place I have found that can supply the 3:07's is Dodge. I haven't found a aftermarket dealer that can supply them.

If you are looking to swap a set of 3:07's into another axle housing. The 3:07 housing is its own animal. The 3:07 carrier assy is its own animal also. The carrier and axle with not work with any other carrier or housing without major machine work.

Mopar was my last choice because of the $$ I thought the carrier was the same for 4. 10 down. I'm glad you posted, I try to have the patience of a dead man but putting incompatible parts together in 15 degree weather is miserable

Glad I poped in. I did a little reading between the lines. I thought you were going to try a 3:07 to a 3:54 and up axle housing. I have the 3:07's in my truck. That is why I found out the interchange. I needed a complete axle assy. One place I was dealing with tried to build me a axle assy from a non 3:07 axle. It didn't work. They had the carrier and gears. It would not fit the other housing.

SG, TDR member Stude, has a front and rear end for sale in the TDR classifieds that has the 3. 07's I believe. I know alot of people are looking for these axles. -Can't member his name but his truck's name is 'Snowflake', he was looking for the 3. 07 front. Bill

Good luck finding them , I run the 3. 07's in my 89 with a gear vendor and love them, runing down the freeway 2000 rpm and 75 mph and makes for great towing.

We found out the hard way when we were putting together my friends 85 Crewcab, and wanted the dually set up with 3. 07's, tried to use a 3. 54 dually housing and nothing fit?

Finnaly had to find a Dually 3. 07 for the crewcab "what a pain in the rear" and kept the spare 3. 07 gears, since then found a 3. 07 single rear housing on Ebay a couple years back, and no one wanted it due to the fact there were no 3. 07 gears around to fit it.

I searched 4 local truck junk yards today and came up with nothing, Dodge dealer say's 2 years backorder!? and it's $851 when it comes in and it's not even chrome. I would'nt pay that much for a D-cab brake to brake much less a r&p.

The axle I replaced cost me $1500 plus shipping from NE. It took six months to find it. I had only found one other during that time. It was in OR. That junkyard wanted $2500.

Those prices were 4 years ago.

They are hard to find and quite expensive. The junkyards know how hard they are to find. My truck is a W series. I couldn't afford to change both axles.
