That annoying rattle that sometimes occures withe top loader - shifter on a NV 4500 is that a fixable this by replacing the gutts in the top loader or not. I. E. the ball springs retainer ect, and if so is this available from D/C ???? In my case its mostly in 5th gear load or not no mater the day or night ect. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't, could go a week without dong it then again it could do it every other day. Or is this a hopeless cause and just get over it. Later Turbine Dude

Are you sure that it's in the transmission? The nut on the end of the shifter inside the ball came loose on mine. Rattled around in there and was pretty irritating until I fixed it.

I know what your talking about, and its not the little nut in the shift knob. What can be done. Mine wasn't like this until the mechanic had my transmission out to put synchronizer gears in it. What is making the noise?

rattle

First ,do you have stock in d/c?? Why go there for transmission Parts???

Example in put shaft D/C $530--disc'ed 380.

That same NV part could be had back in 97 for $125. with next day 10 am delivery didnt add $30 to the cost of the 1300 mile ride.

You do the math ,,or is cost not a factor??

1-800-std-tran.

Do i own stock in standard transmission?? NOT!!

I did relay to them how i retained the fifth gear nut back in 96 with a seat of the pants fix to get it home fix that held for 160k+plus,

Now what you decribe sound like what i had for 10k and i had a idea of what was going on,,,i added a light glove-then felt shirt/jacket to the shift lever, and sure enough at 168k fifth gear droped out. I should note i had made up my mind i was going to run it till it failed because out of the box (factory) 32k was it (2 months at best).

I wounder how the fifth gear was retained in your transmission??

My noise sounded like b-b's in the shift tower at first once in a while at certian rps then all the time-then louder--ad shirt!!!

in any case cost and down time were less because had i torne it down looking at first i would have not seen anything wrong. .

Second why were snyro's needed??? mine are still factory,750k+

and did oncedrive home 800 miles with out the use of clutch action--nother story,

Lube-----Or shifting---say speed type?????

have you up dated that input shaft bearing Yet??If not sucks to be you$$$$$$$ remember input shaft cost i related to.

Third--i use fifth all the time, drop in around 42-45 mph have the power and lite pedal it picks up. With money and power- common sence is the rule, question is how long do you want to retain both?? And what is the goal??

tdramrmbr:

to put it like you did:

will I have a 5th gear nut problem? NOT!! I had the 5th gear nut welded to the shaft. So will it move? NOT!!!!

I bought the truck used from a farmers coop, its sole purpose in life was to pull heavy loads to fields, through the fields and back.

We are talking about 25000lb+ loads. Which in the fields require alot of shifting and missed shifting. I'm not sure if they used the clutch or not. It had 117000 miles of this kind of abuse on it when i bought it.

not really sure what you mean by this:

Third--i use fifth all the time, drop in around 42-45 mph have the power and lite pedal it picks up. With money and power- common sence is the rule, question is how long do you want to retain both?? And what is the goal??

I have not replaced or updated the bearing at this point. Are you saying that that could be where the noise is comming from.

Really wasn't looking for alot of sarcasism, just some info.
