I am in the market for a topper for my '01 ram. I have always thought that a topper detracts from the visual appeal of the truck. Does anyone recommend a topper that actually looks sharp on a shortbox quadcab? Also from a quality or features standpoint, do any topper manufacturers seem to stand out above the rest to our knowledgable members? Also, are there any places to buy them at exceptional prices?

Yup

Mine is a beauty, if I must say. It's built in Canada by Ultra, has a reinforced roof, very high quality windows and door, and is lined with fuzzy stuff inside to keep it quiet and attractive. Very well built unit, got mine in Butte Montana, at Harrison Motors. Also has a non-drilled mounting system which is very positive and has not allowed the topper to move in three years of use.

I have had two different A. R. E. 's. One on a Toyota and one on my present Ram. Good quality construction and hardware. Seem's like it has a lifetime warranty on the finish. Mine's a cab-high, but they make several different styles. It uses clamps to attach but comes off in about 15 minutes using the drive thru rack I built. Good Luck!!

I've got a SungTop XV. I did all the searches imaginable and for the features I wanted (cab-high, large side windows, LED brake light, carpeted interior, frame-less rear window, etc... ) I found the snugtop looked best.

I'll send you a photo if you are interested - just send me a private message...

I bought mine new with the topper, and had'nt put much thought into it prior to owning one.

NOW I would look for the following:

A-reinforcement areas in the roof allowing racks for canoe, small

boat, really big guns, mother inlaw, etc.

B-extensive dealer network

C-extended height (lets face it our trucks are slightly less

aerodynamic than a house) get one large enough to cuss a cat in mileage be darned

D-third light attached to rear glass (I have broke the light twice while loading items into the bed with the tailgate up (yeah I know "Dummy put the gate down")

In my way o thinkin it reinforces B (went to local dealer they installed new bracket for $5), C (bigger hole to toss stuff into when you're in a hurry), and D (if it wasn't hanging down I wouldn't have broke it).

IMO

SNUGTOP "TOPGUN"

If you look at 777's RIG in the " Readers Rigs" section, you will see what the SNUGTOP "TOPGUN" shell looks like on a short bed 4X4. I am very happy with this top. Very stong. It is also lined.

They will match your paint codes from your truck and paint it at the factory before shipping. $1800 is the price. :)

www.4are.com Love my MX series with walk-thru door! I would post a pic but my computer is already packed. Of course, the Avatar is a little to small to tell. Check out the site, click customers trucks, Pics, Dodge. You should find what you are looking for. Good luck. Oh, the paint match was nothing less than perfect. Two paint shops have wanted to know if this was all done at the Dodge plant at the same time. Never have seen such a perfect match. Good luck

I Like your screen name 777 MECHANIC.

I have made every one of the upper wing chords (joins fuselage to wing) on the 777s and great many of the 777 lowers since the very first R&D parts.

... small world

Hey John,

Here at DFW we do overnight PS, A, and B checks on the 777 along with many engine changes for the time stagger. Ir is a small world. :D

best for severe elements??

All of you topper gurus: I will be getting a new work truck this spring ('02 Duramax/Allison, no choice on the brand, BIG GM contract... :( ) and I need to know the HIGHEST QUALITY toppers for water and dust sealing. How about durability on dirt roads and two track trails? Thanks

Heres my Leer. It has a door seal kind that is great for dust. is a cab-high, I don't have the boot but 2 slide windows

Makes a good match to the rear windows of the QC

Great total deal too!

I have a Raider Vagabond on my 01 Quad short. It is contoured with the cab and has a little rise from front to back. I looked at the straight tops and to me look not as nice, I'll put it that way. So, color match, slider, carpet, light, neopreme sealer strip, and installed, oh, life time warrenty on structure and paint. There were more options in the pamphelet (sp). Made out of Canada. The best price for all you get I could find, (looked for months before I bought the truck). The flat tops look like a chop top on the Quad shorts.
