Hitch Cover

I am hoping someone out there can point me in the right direction to buy an inexpensive torch set (hose, regulators, cutting head, ect. ) of descent quality (without tanks).

I hate having to borrow one when I need it.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,Go for Victor or Airco,no Craftsman. If you're not in a hurry you can find them used often with tanks that you own. Tank lease/rent starts adding up fast. If you buy used tanks get a good receipt. If you own tanks it works the same way,you exchange MTs for full, the last time you will ever see the tanks you own is the first time you trade for full ones.

Victor is what I have and have had good luck with it, I think the key would be service, buy what is avail in your area,
Kevin

I agree on brands as the other guys said. I have a Victor set that I got new almost thirty years ago. Works like a charm every time. I tend to use mine for heating applications more than welding. Find a used set with TANKS. If your not sure if the previous owner really owned the tanks, you can write the #'s down and ckeck them at a welding supply to see if they are legit. Chris

VICTOR... STILL AMERICAN #ad
stay away from "uniweld", and other junk! Spend the bucks now or you may pay later! #ad

I might add that Victor regulators and valves are easily rebuildable, parts are easy to come by and are reasonably priced.

I have a very old Smith set. It's small but will easily cut 3/4". It's not necessary to spend extra for 2 stage regs. The 2 stage require less readjusting as the tanks go down - not a concern for for most applications! I have old tanks that I own. I think it's bigger than R that are leased now.

Victor! Also get the full size tanks, not the little ones that need to be filled every time you turn around.

May seem a little cold/heartless, but I got my set (from the tanks to the flame-tip, with 2wheel dolly) from the (recently) widowed relative of my next-door neighbor... $125. . tank exchange was only a hassle the first time (no documentation to keep the gas Nazis off the place's butt)...
works real good.

Come on Rich, That ain't cold the gal didn't need that burning rig and you did. folks helping folks! Really.

On large tanks... don't forget the oxygen needs to be hydro'ed every 5 years (I think, may be more) If you don't empty them often enough you have to pay a fee, I went for the mid-size set.
