Used to live in tornado alley (KC). Florida has small tornados now and then sometimes big ones. At least in KC we had a basement.

In Florida there are very few houses with basements.

By the time that storm system reached us in northeast Texas between midnight and 3 AM, it had lost most of its "punch". We received much needed rain with very little thunder, lightning, and wind. We don't have a basement, but we had a steel beam reinforced/steel lined "safe room" built in our present house just in case the weather gets rough. Fortunately, we haven't needed to use it in nearly 7 years.
