I need advice on a torque converter and power adders.

I plan on never going anymore than maybe a set of RV 275's and possibly a Quad XZT+. I currently have a Transgo Shift kit in and was considering upgrading to a torque converter from these guys eBay Store - Direct Transmission Parts: TORQUE CONVERTER, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, TRANSMISSION PUMP.

My Trans is currently in good shape, shifts fine, doesn't slip, etc... ,I am just trying to get a lower stall to help with MPG, and better drivability in the lower RPM range, and truth be told I really can't justify paying $1200-1500 for one of the other ones. I don't pull anything more than a 6000# boat.

My father in law uses one of theirs behind his 12V right know and is happy with it.

Anybody use them?

Would those power adders be too much for my simple transmission/tc combo?

Anyother advice or recommendations are welcome! ( keep in mind I'm a tight A**, so $$$$ is a factor)

Thanks in advance

Eric

Ok! Let's try this.

Does anyone else have a similar setup? ie. torque converter, and Stock transmission w/shiftkit. with minor mods. ie. 275 injectors and a chip?

I'm not trying to start a Trans war, and I know about the rules on Transmission vendors, and opinions.

I'm simply trying to get info on the setup I described. (Names of companies can be withheld)

Is it sufficient? Could it hold up to the MINOR mods I'm looking to use?

Hope someone can advise!

All stock autos need help.

There is more than just a converter and valvebody to really do them right, but it is a great start.

When you say 'chip' it doesn't tell us much. ( since there is no such thing) What box are you talking about?

also, be VERY careful buying from anyone who isn't revered here, as anyone can say they have the best, heavy duty, top of the line, etc and not be anything but a rebuilt/painted stock unit.

Thanks for the feedback! I have a Superchips programmer right know. Hate it! Looking at the Quad XZT, not the Adrenaline, or Smarty (too much power for my combo) . I just have a hard time justifying putting that much money into the Transmission (right now). I do understand they hold up muuuuuuch better than stock, and this may just be a bandaid until I can afford/justify one of the revered transmissions (which I would love to get). I will take your advice and be cautious about the repaints ( which according to my father-in-law, it is a billet cover, and works fine in his truck.

Thanks again!

Anyone running a stock trans with a similar power combo?

I did my own trans last year, put in a converter supposed to be a suncoast. Stalls about 1900 behind my engine. It would probably go lower in a normal truck, but I've got 3. 55 gears and 34" tires.

The shift kit is well worth it, you need to watch how high you crank the line pressure or you will need a voltage regulator to keep from sending the computer into limp home. Haven't tried or heard of anyone using the ebay t/c's but that's what I was going to buy before I found my t/c.

For what it's worth, I think these transmissions are pretty decent for mild towing with mostly stock engines. Only reason I rebuilt mine was the snap ring on the o. d unit broke. I wanted to play it safe and tore the whole thing down. Looking back I probably could have gotten away with the stocker for a long time, but I wanted to make sure I didn't break down 300 miles from home.

So I spent lots of $$ to upgrade all the internals. Got rid of anything aluminum in the planetaries, upgraded to 6 pinion planet in 1st and put in a billet shaft so I could use a t/c lockup switch and not have to worry about the stock shaft twisting if I screwed something up with the switch.

So far, I am looking at a couple upgrades to make it better. I would like to mod the v/b so I could have lockup in 1st and 2nd gear, but I can't find any info to do it myself. I also want to upgrade the t/c valve to lock faster and slip less.

When you decide to do the trans, buy a book or do some research. While you have it out, it's not that hard to pull it down and check the internals. Half the price of replacing the trans is the labor to pull it and re-install it.

Good luck, hope some of this rambling helps.
