After looking through previous posts with no luck I have a quick question -

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a mystery switch (homemade) vs. a production plug and play torque converter lock-up box? Other than price. And which box is the most popular?

FYI I do not run an exhaust brake just want to lock the TC for better acceleration every once in a while. ;)

Thanks,

Jack

switch

I have one and it is for when the TPS switch gives trouble. I have had one for around 50k miles or so. I don't use it to race though. good luck JimK

A lot of us have the switch rigged so that we can prevent a lock up during heavy towing or hard excelleration.

You can go to the TST site and get the info for a Mystery switch.

Or you can call the trans companies and get a controller that will let you set where the converter clutch engages.

With the mystery switch, you will be able to lock it and shift locked, but you risk breaking the shafts in the trans. You can also set it to stay unlocked. But why.

I have the switches. Then got the trans tighten up and only use the switch to warm a cold trans in cold weather. This is an unlocked position.

The one thing I found with the TST diagram was it shows tapping into the black/orange TC control wire. If you only tie onto it, you will have problems, or at least I did. You have to break the wire so you can provide ground, or the original connection or leave it open so it can't lock up. I tried the tap method per diagram, and the computer wouldn't release the ground, so I shuddered to a stop, stalled the engine. Once the key was turned off, then back on, things were normal again until you tried the switch. Break the wire.

I have an exhaust brake, and plan to put the switch in as I want to leave the TC locked going down hill, but it will take attention on my part not to forget it. I would prefer the electronic box, as it remembers for you, but for now, it is the switch.

I had a switch. It was 3 way force lock-forced unlock and auto. I now have a smart controler I leave on all the time. Much nicer.
