I recently bought a '99 4X4 Auto LWB with about 55K miles on it. It seems to have a problem at around 1600 to 1800 rpm. Accelerating normally, the trans shifts from gear to gear without trouble. Nice firm positive shifts. When it reaches 1600 rpm it acts like its shifting again. Nice firm shift and actually sets you back in the seat a bit. Continuing to accelerate, it acts like it down shifts and the tach jumps to 1800 or 1900 rpm. If I try to hold the throttle between 1600 and 1800 it constantly up shifts and down shifts. Anything faster that 1900 and it stays in the lower range. It does this in 3rd as well as OD. Always around the same rpm range. Do I have a bad torque converter or could it be a programming issue. Thanks

actually it is TSB 18-02-99 , erratic
TC apply , what is happening is your TC is locking and unlocking , if this reflash has been done then possibly the TPS is on the way out .

whats the build date of the truck ? its on the sticker inside the drivers side door .

My truck just started this same problem this past weekend. It is the converter (locking and unlocking) my truck has 53,000 miles and i just ordered and recived Bill K. converter and valve body. When I change these parts do you think the problem will go away? Thanks Don

Let me know if it fixes the problem. I'd hate to go to the dealer and have them tell me its the TC and charge me a fortune for something I can replace myself. Although I should go in for the larger tire speedo reprogramming and may have them reflash it.

Torque converter is locking and unlocking. Mine started at about 32,000 miles. Took it in to dealership after doing some research on the problem and finding out that several TSBs can fix the problem depending on the date of manufacture. They kept it a few hours flashed the PCM and when I got it back it has run without problem ever since... even felt like there was a little additional power, certainly changed the way it shifted.

val , yours is the reflash , it pretty much effects all 98. 5s and most 99's . unfortunately if your truck hasn't had the emissions reflash they will probably do that also .
