Hi all. I was pulling an empty grain wagon home today and it felt like my torque converter was locking and unlocking a lot. The wagon was empty only weighing 1000lbs or so and I was only going 35 to 38 mph. It would cause the rpms to go up and down about 200 rpm. Is there anything I can do to adjust this or fix it? Trans has been working great for me otherwise. It shifts fine and oil looks great. I do notice it doing the same thing when going about 10 to 15 mph up a slight hill in town. Im wondering what I need to do or if there is at module or kit I can install to help this. Thanks

There is talk about Happi-box and I believe DTT has a filter for electrical interference affecting lockup on the TC. I believe the problem leans toward the alternator. Do a search here for the Happi-box and also visit

http://dieseltrans.com/

and search their forums.

Very good advice. The alternator brushes are getting noisy, the computer sees it as a unlock signal the relocks. BUY the filter and it will be gone.

If you want to experiment, first clean the battery grounds, it may go away for a time. New brushes will make it go away for a time also. The filter fixes it. If you don't fix it, you may be buying a trans.

If it is happening on your 99 24v at 10-15 mph i don't think it is your tcc

locking and unlocking.

If you do decide there is an issue with locking and unlocking, the dealer has

a tsb flash for the pcm that makes it ignore electrical noise from the

alternator and tps, so it will make the problem go away no matter what

the signal is coming from.

Also when you get your truck to act up put your foot under the brake pedal

and pull up as I have seen the brake switch go bad and cause the same thing

over bumps, not probable but an easy check.

Thanks guys for the help. I did check batteries and cables and all is good and clean. I reset the apps but nothing has helped. Im sorry I should have stated that this is happening on my '02 auto. When I drive it down the road and around town it works fine but if i go up a slight grade going up the street at 10 to 15 it does this surging. It did it when pulling that empty wagon at 35 to 38 but when I would go up a slight grade then the surging would quit and then when on more of a level highway it would do it again. Puzzling!! I think I will give DTT a call but was wondering what all you thought. Thanks again for your help . Youre a great bunch of guys and Im pround to be a member.

i had a similar problem back in the spring, the trans would surge (i think it was the TC locking and unlocking, for me it was happening at highway speeds, 70 MPH unoladed) i dropped the pan and changed out the fluid, in the process finding a ton of metal flakes  ... anyway, changed the fluid and the trans hasn't done it since. maybe changing the fluid will help you to, idk but it might be worth a shot

Mine is acting up badly right now, a friend also has a truck doing the same thing. Mine happened after 5 hours driving in the rain. It had happened before, but was very mild, kicking in and out in a speed range of 45 - 50. This time it happened from 45 - 75 and was so severe I thought the transmission was going out. This was happening on the highway with a very light load.

I believe it to be the electrical noise but did not know there was a flash for it.

I am calling the dealer... . gary

Just went through this with my truck.

Fixed it by cleaning all of the grounds in the engine compartment, including the large one on the driver side down by the headlight.

I then cleaned all of the contacts on the alternator.

Then I installed the DTT noise filter, and reset the APPS after letting it sit several hours with the batteries disconected.

Problem gone.

If it returns, I'll replace the alternator, since as it ages it generates the noise that interferes with the APPS. (It's also alot cheaper to replace!)

Replacing the APPS is your last resort.

Good luck.

I bet they want to rebuild the trans.

Electrical noise, put the filter on it.
