What is the best TC for a '90 Dodge. It has the three speed transmission. I am looking for one that will do great for pulling a gooseneck and be strong enough for a sled pull every now and then. Let me know what you all think. I am going to buy one today or tomorrow. This truck has 350-400HP.

Smoker,

I had the Suncoast Converter put in mine and I love it:D. I like the way they lock the Coverter up a WOT. Give Ron or Joe at Suncoast a call, I think you will be impressed with their knowledge and customer service. If you really want to get technical ask to speak to Ernie. :) Their number is 1-800-868-0053 or check them out on the web at www.suncoastconverters.com

The truck he is wanting to put it in is a non lockup transmission, so your experience with the TC won't help much unfortunatly. Do they offer a non lock up convertor? I have no idea... ... ... besides its more fun to have a transmission where lockup ain't no big deal :D

I would suggest going and posting this in the First Gen forum so you can get replys from people who have and drive the non lock up converters everyday. Helicopter Dan is one person I know that has one, he used DTT and loves it.

DPerry,

Welcome to the board.

If you notice lock-up under WOT your TC isn't doing it's job. A TC that is working properly will feel the same in lock-up as without. Using lock-up under wide open throttle will decrease the life of your TC drastically. I don't even use lock-up at all under WOT and I have never had anyone notice that I wasn't in lock-up.

You will be glad you did ;)

Whoever can build a first generation truck up to have 350-400 hp with a fluid coupled torque convertor can sure teach me a few tricks about performance.

I've never heard of a first gen with this much power. What was done to this amazing truck?

:)

I would love to know more!

Stefan,

Thanks for the welcome. I just recently had the Suncoast TC and valve Body set up done on my 2001 Cummins and on my 2001 Powerstroke also. I have been very pleased with the performance of both trucks. It is my understanding that the TC lock up is the heart and soul of the diesel engine, and that not locking up the TC is one way to address inadequate holding capacity. We are putting an enormous amount of power to the Cummins for racing purposes and felt we needed 100% lock-up to acheive our goal.

If its not "locked" then never have to worry bout slipping the TC clutch. When I race my converter doesn't lock up and I do just fine at the track. Lock up used to be "impressive" but with the "new" convertor, is just kinda ho hum theres lock up (125rpm drop). So I would say lock up is not the heart and soul, least not in my case.

On another note, whose injectors are you using? And you mentioned "for racing purposes"... what do you run? ¼ mile and 1/8 mile?

If Smoker's truck has a 97 motor in it, does it also have the transmission out of the 97?????? If so that means there is a lock up convertor in it.

Kat Disel,

I have a 2001, I was just trying to help out Smoker and was stating my experience with SunCoast Torque Coverters, and thought they may be able to help. I realize that DTT makes a non-locking TC, and that is fine if that is what you are looking for. My opinion is that I like to have a Converter Lock-up. I have rode in both styles and I choose to have the one that locks -up 100%. I think they both are great and both have a place on the market. As far as my injectors and my times at the track... will you be attending Thunder in Muncie???????:D

Well my first post, was just to point out that the early Dodge convertors are non lock up fromt he factory and genrally you replace them with the same type of TC. Thats when I read it was a 1990 truck, since its been mentioned its got a 97 motor then it "might" have a transmission that has the lockup TC. Wasn't trying to discredit lock up. Thunder in Muncie..... yes I have vacation requested for it.

KatDiesel,

Shhhhhh, I am over here on vacation. I do own TS Performance Products, and Kat Diesel is correct I do Program the Ford PowerStroke. I also have a 2001 Dodge Cummings, we do offer products for the Dodge. However I am not here to sell anything, just here to visit with the Dodge guys. I have been doing a little work to and was just seeing how it may compare to some of your trucks. I really enjoy working on the Cummins and the PowerStroke and thought I would come see how things are over here:cool:. Great Site!!

Still wonder whose injectors your using? BullyDog 5's? Curious of what you think of the "big" injectors + auto transmission... ... ??? Which turbo are you running?

KatDiesel,

Love those big injectors, lots of smoke, big power increase. The turbo I will have to keep quite for a bit, I think it is going to get a big brother before long. The Stock auto was tore up at 900 miles, I guess it didn't want to stick around and see what was going to happen next:D. I love the truck, but I don't get to drive it much. Sheila is the primary driver and she dosen't like to share, she let's me drive it when I am doing some performance mods to and that's it.

Bob,

I am sorry about that, I promise it won't happen again:)
