2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Front end questions

When I bought the beast in March 2004, it already had the BD torque convertor and valve body in it. It also had a K&N inbox filter. Since then I have only added a 60 horse cam plate. I have 5" Grand Rock stack system on the way.

Now for my question. I am seriously thinking about adding Piers Diamond B 370 injectors and was wondering if my tc and vb would be able to handle the additional ponies? Also what other adverse effects might the 370's have on my truck? What other mods might i want to make before adding the injectors? Summer is starting so funds shouldn't be a big issue.

I'm a 19 year old newbie so any advice you fellas could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Finally I would like to salute the greatest engine on earth, the CUMMINS TURBO DIESEL!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Joe. I forgot to mention I was also planning to add egt, boost, and trans. temp gauges in between the stacks and injectors. I sure can't afford an engine meltdown.

What about a bigger turbine housing and air filter? Are these necessary? I have the stock 12cm2 housing and I've heard egts can run high with it. If I do upgrade the housing should I go with a 14 or 16. I don't want a lot of turbo lag.

Welcome to the TDR. :)

With the 370's and the plate, you WILL need more air. The stock turbo won't be enough. With my setup (plate in stock position), I see 40# boost and 1300* EGT's. To help get more air, drill some holes on the bottom half of the air filter housing, and remove the "snorkel" that is between the air box and fender. Or, you can go with a bigger aftermarket. Going to a BHAF, from a K&N drop-in, dropped my EGTs by 50*. Not much, but it all helps.

Your transmission will live for a while, but you better start saving up. $3-5k range, depending on what you need, and if you can do the installation yourself, or not. My stocker lasted 6 mths, with the current mods. I could slip it with a stock engine, but was really hurting with the mods. Can't slip the new one. :D

Yep. Pyro, boost (Would suggest a 50 or 60# gauge, then you'll only have to do it once. ) and transmission temp gauges.

Would also suggest filling out the sig line for your truck. It will help us get answers to your questions about your truck quicker.

Thanks for the welcome! You guys advice has been great.

For air filters I was planning on going with a K&N conical or AFE Proguard.

What are the pro and cons of a new turbine housing versus a new turbo besides price?

Sorry for playing a game of 20 questions. I have a lot to learn. :{

97 2500, 4:10 gears, K&N inbox filter, 12cm2 stock turbo, boost elbow, 60hp plate, BD TC and VB, 5" stacks and gauges on the way

Either of those filters ought to be fine. If I was getting one of those, I think I'd get the Progaurd 7. I use the BHAF because it is a big paper filter. I run in lots of dirt.

The "pro" of a bigger housing (as long as it isn't too big), is lower EGT's. "Con" is, more turbo lag, and if it is bigger than what is really needed, it could raise the EGT's again or more (it would lower the boost to much). I think a 40/35 Hybrid would be the best of both worlds, depending on how you use the truck, and other future fuel mods. If you tow heavy, you may need a HX-40. A modified one would be better than a stock HX-40. The modded ones spool better.

Ask away. Can't learn anything if you don't. Be sure to use the search feature here, too.

Enjoy the truck. '97 was a good year. :D Of course, I am a tad biased. :-laf

Thanks again for your advice. I'll keep all of your suggestions in mind as I go about bombing my truck. :D If you have any more thoughts, fire away.

Also how do you fill out your sig line? When I go to my user profile the only headings i have are forum info, contact info, additional info, and group memberships.

I've been running on a TC and shift kit for over 4 years now... Holds about 400 hp just fine. (NOW I've done it - I'm sure the transmission will go on my way home today)

Thanks for the link. I'm on the job right now, but I'll get my sig line filled out ASAP.

I'll also look into getting my KDP killed.

Once again, thanks everybody for the advice. You've all been very helpful.
