Hey, guys. I was wondering exactly how much torque and hp my stock transmission and convertor can handle. I was hoping to throw in some injectors, 3k gsk, MAYBE some other stuff later. I'm just not getting nearly the power I want. What are my options for the transmission- new performance convertors are pretty expensive (student loans, bills, etc. )? Thanks!

The problem is that the stock torque convertor will not put the power to the ground for much more than stock. It will just get the ATF hot.

Don't add any power until you're capable of taking the plunge into a performance trans.

You'll read alot of info using the search feature. Some good, Some bad. Get a WHOLE/COMPLETE trans rebuild. You will be alot happier.

Call DTT. Talk to them about the options within the trans.

Good Luck

Not to scare you, but my stock transmission started to having problems at 1,000 miles and was replaced to 11,000 with another stock unit (truck was stock at the time). That new one started to slip at 35,000 stock miles. Upgraded it then, added the mods and all has been good for the last 40,000.

I had a Stock transmission, freshly rebuilt..... added a 6plate and just 215hp injectors..... and it started to slip. I wouldn't go any farther than you have till you get a trans upgrade.

Goerends, DTT, Suncoast, and ATS are the big dogs... . do searches on all of them. Ask about the warranties that each offers, and talk to each company, see who impresses you the most.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Thanks. Guess I'll be sticking w/ what I have for a while. My truck is nearing 230,000 mi. , and never given me any transmission trouble. Lucky, I guess. Perhaps I should begin to look into it just in case. What did you all pay for your transmission/convertor upgrades?

We aren't really supposed to talk about pricing on here..... Shop around. Is your best bet.

Call Goerends, then the rest... . you'll be supprised!

OK, maybe I am heading toward disaster, but I bought my truck a year ago and have put on 20K, the truck was bone stock, needless to say it is not now.

I haven't had ANY problems with the transmission, maybe the guy before me had done something to it, I should find out. The transmission was sluggish to shift, but when I blew the oil cooler hose, I adjusted the throttle pressure and the adjusted the bands... HUGE difference!!!

I just put in the mystery switch in tonight, made a big difference.

So I don't know, I've got 230K, with to my knowledge is the stock transmission, a bunch of freed up HP, and no problems. I guess I have plenty of line pressure because I blew the compression fitting on the pressure oil cooler line!! Maybe this indicates a modified transmission I don't know... here is a pic of the line I blew up. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133317 Am I lucky or headed for surprise?

The pressure running through the cooler lines has very little to do with your line pressures in the transmission. As I recall (cooler PSI might be wrong) it's only about 60psi in the cooler, and a modified transmission's line pressures are in upwards of 135psi.
