Does anybody know the torque specs for the backplate on the turbo exhaust housing? My service manual just shows non-wastgated housings. :p

Thanks,

David

Joe from Gale Banks says...

Hey Xgoldman!

I just checked my phone mail and there was an answer to my call to Gale Banks yesterday..... That's where that particular 14cm2 housing came from.

Joe @ Gale Banks says the torque spec is: 30 ft. lbs.

Don't forget to use some quality anti-seize on those bolts.

30 ft lb can't be right. These bolts are M8 x 1. 25 thread, close to 5/16 x18 thread for those brought up with American thread pitches. The backplate bolts are grade 8. 8, similar to grade 5 American (SAE, USS). The bolt would have to be grade 12. 9 (grade 9) to take that kind of torque. Not necessary or helpful with the application in mind here, grade 8. 8 is fine, especially for something that gets so hot anyway (detrimental to heat treat of a grade 12. 9). So, I feel 18 ft lb is plenty and if you try 30, you may twist the head off  In fact, 18 may be a bit too high as that is used elsewhere on the engine for grade 10. 9 bolts (about grade 8).

I was confused also by the answer from Banks..... I'm not trying to determine who is correct - I just posted the two answers that I got! Thanks for the email Joe!

I hope an appropriate spec can be determined.
