Torque Tube Problems.....

Alright here goes..... I have a Afe torque tube on and have had it on for some time now..... I noticed yesterday that one of the clamps that hold the rubber coupler on the tube to Air box was all chewed up and wore a hole right through the rubber coupler... .



Now my question is to prevent this from happening again would it be ok to use rather than those rubber couplers, something the same size and thickness like braided 4" hose in place of hose couplers????



The hose would be quite a bit stronger than the soft rubber... . But its not gonna flex as much as the rubber ones did..... Is that gonna cause any problems being the motor and everything twists and does what it does under the hood with those hose pieces not giving much flexability like the rubber AFE ones did? THANKS

The real question is, what chewed up the metal clamp, causing it to eat a hole in the rubber tube? I have had a TT on my 04 for three years, with no problems.

The metal clamp is just fine... . Its the rubber coupler that is chewed up... . I'm thinking maybe it was too tight... . I dont know... .

I'm new here but not new to this problem. AFE had a bad run of rubber connectors. Most just call them and they send new, stronger ones out. Worth a call to them.

I called And sure enough they are shiping me new ones FREE... . Oo.



Anyway u say that its nothing new... . So i take it that you have heard of these rubber pieces breaking apart?

On vehicles that see higher egts some had issues. They have since changed the material. The Torque tubes are no longer in production either. With the arrival of the stage 2 I think they just dropped it from the line-up.

Kind of too bad, too, 'cause the metal Torque Tube really projected turbo whistle well. My 66 sounded fierce with it on.



That said, the Stage II, although more quiet, flows a lot better.

i have one of the newer tubes thats made of hard plastic... . Then is connected with rubber couplers to the turbo and the air filter box... ... . I know the new ones the tube is actually hard mounted to the air filter box and leaving the mount to the turbo with a rubber coupller, that way instead of 2 you only have one in the kit

Glad they're taking care of you. I've seen a couple pics from guys who had failures. I have the stage 2 with all molded 6"-4" tube with only one connector. I keep an eye on it everytime I change oil from underneath. I still don't know if it's the better rubber material or not but it is holding up just fine so I guess all is well.

I had the same problem with my 04's boots. Geno's took care of it even after the 1 year warranty ended over 1 year ago. The new boots are a different material.

Dumbo question of the day. Why is it called a "Torque Tube"?



Because it supplies enough torque to keep the air filter from falling on the top of the fender well?



In my experience, usually torque tubes have more to do a steel tube excepting the driveshaft torque of a 200Hp or so motor mounted 30 or so feet from a gear box, than it has to do with a diesel engine air intake system.
