The Torque Tube looks cool. If you have high horsepower, it'll increase air flow a little. It also makes the turbo a little louder. I have one... I'd buy it again.

Anyone running one with the stock air filter assembly?

I am running the factory filter box with a torque tube. I had an AFE stage I system with the pro guard 7 filter on my truck but I did not like the fact that I pulled the filter minder into the red everytime I accelerated hard, so I put the stock box back on and installed one of the new Amsoil air filters in it. Oo.

its an enclosed driveline, or torque tube, is really a very effective design.

Its advantages are positive location of the rear end, with no Panhard rods, traction bars, etc needed for stability. Only one U-joint is needed, and it runs in a constant lube shared with the transmission. It was used in many passenger cars so I doubt the "out on the farm" angle. The newest hi-zoot Jags and Aston Martins use a torque tube driveline, so it can't be all that bad.

The main negative on an enclosed driveline, though, is that there are very limited ratios available for the rear end. Also, U-joints are expensive and more complicated to change - and the seal which retains the lube in the tube, when worn, can cause all the transmission lube to drain back into the rear housing, and eventually into the brake drums.

When everything's in good shape, the torque tube is fine for its intended purpose. When it wears out, or we change that purpose, it's a major pain in the rear! :D

Oh, you ment the air intake.

Since most everything I have read says the stock filter is pretty decent, I decided to modify the stock box with Peter Tomka's Cool Power cold air intake (much better than drilling holes in the stock box, which brings in hot engine compartment air).

Next I swapped out the stock "torque tube" for the Cool Blue tube. It looks great, has no internal restrictions, and provides much better insulation than a metal tube.

I don't like systems that provide marginal sealing from the hot engine compartment or marginal filtration.

AGREED ROCK, You are speaking my language, However before those mods , I am spending the weekend changing out the camshaft bearings to a set of Torrington's to further reduce drag in the motor which will also help improve overall stress on the motor oil which will allow me to go 50 more miles between oil changes. IMHO this is a needed BOMB BA and I will post results of the out come. Oo.

Yeah torque tube is the driveline like a few others said. Pinzgauer, Unimog and I believe Volvo use them on their portal axle setups.

Just to clear it up, the torque tube is both a drive line system on Unimogs, pinzes etc and a new air intake tube for our truck. Its funny to see both answers here, usually anything outside of diesel pickups is ignored.

C5/C6 Corvettes and Turboprop aircraft use torque tube drive as well:cool:
