Just received this email today from ATS.

If you are using 50 ft lbs to torque your exhaust manifolds, you are probably stretching the bolts well beyond their limits, which will cause them to loosen. Stick with the 32-35 factory recommendation.

Dear Tim,

That must be a misprint in our instructions. I will let the proper people know. If you have any more questions please call our tech dept.

thanks

Hasselbach,

With all due respect to the email above.

ATS probably doenst want people breaking off bolts in to the head of the truck and holding them responsible; which I can completely understand.

On the other hand,

You asked on TDR what to torque them to; you received responses based on experiences of TDR members that have "hung" alot of these manifolds and have had bolts fall off with factory torque settings.

If you wanted the factory torque setting anyone could have told you that.

43NM. :)

To each his own. .

But if you spec out the grade and size of the bolt that is installed, at 50 ft lbs, you are well exceeding the limits of elasticity for the bolt of its size, grade and lenght, which would account in the bolt actually loosening. I did however note that the threads on the engine were installed dry, so I am installing the ATS without any anti sieze or oil (like factory).

I'll report back after a few weeks with how the torque holds up.

I hope they are going to change their installation instructions!!!! As I said, I torqued mine down to meet their specs!!

Well, I guess the good news is, if you do actually crank them to 55 ft lbs, the stress on the cylinder head will actually distort enough to twist the exhaust valves at an angle, thus making it in the shape of a hemi. .

Hey, you got that Hemi Cummins under that hood??

ATS Intake Manifold

Still waiting for them to come good on the redesign of the Intake manifold for the 03.

So, good luck on them reprinting their directions.
