While dropping a friend off to get a new muffler at Midas Muffler today I saw a '97 CTD Ram owned by GTE up on the rack and went in to check it out. It was hooked up to a Transmission Saver machine, the tech had just finished sucking the old fluid out and running some solvent though the AT,you could see the dirty solvent thru a glass part of the machine,it was very dirty. While the tech was telling me how great this machine is he removed the pan to change the filter,he was wasting his time, the filter and pan bottom were absolutely spotless. Next step was to pump in new fluid, the machine removes 100%. I was impressed. Cost for a Ram AT is $150 including fuild, filter and band adjustment, they will knock the price of the ATF off if you want to add synthetic and supply it yourself. Seems like a good way to go if you want to go with syn oil. Anyone ever try this system?

Gene, the tech didn't tell me the type, but said it was compatible with all ATFs. The machine was very good at removing all the solvent though, there was very little on the bottom of the pan.

Bill,
The last time we had my wife's trans. in her Expedition serviced, We had this done. It seems like the way to go. Cost about $120. 00. She tows a horse trailer twice a week, so we do it about every 20K. I did see a post from Bill K, saying it wasn't nesassary to flush the whole thing. I never follwed up to ask why. I might e-mail him and ask.

illflem, ask Bill Kondolay about this process before having it done to your auto. trans.

Hey guys, I have had this done to my 1/2 GMC, and believe that the reason they should not put any solvent in it is because it loosens up the bad stuff that may have built up. There is a gummy build up that can happen in older transmissions. The solvent loosens it up and they can't get it all out, if memory serves me. Call Bill K. and get the scoop, but I have it done WITHOUT adding the solvent.

P. S. 120. 00 seems high, local change place charges 89. 95 total but well worth it no matter. I can't seem to change it without wearing most of it.

I've had this type of service cost more than $120. It was more like $2689. 99. That's including the price of the fluid change which was only $89. 99. The $2600 was for the damage done to my transmission. This was on my 94 2500. The flush caused some junk in the transmission to clog up the heat exchanger. It didn't just burn up the clutches. I had to have everything inside the transmission replaced, includingthe overdrive case. Lots of damage done.
I know this is just one man's experience, but 3 of the transmission rebuilders in my area have stopped using the machines. Just something to think about.

In theory it sounded like a great idea, but I'm glad the evidence of other's has convinced me to never have this done.

IMO maybe it is ok if one were to have this service done since new. If the vehicle has already accumilated quite a few miles before this service it seems like you're asking for problems for sure.

None the less, I won't be having it done.
