the throttle is real touchy on my truck to the point it is really hard to drive on rough roads and none of my friends can even drive my truck and they all have dodge cummins too. is there any thing that makes the throttle real touchy i have a 3k GSK #10 plate HTT 62-12 turbo ATS manifold and 16 degree timing this was real bad when i had my 180 hp pump and now with my 215 pump. any one have any ideas what it might be

thanks

Ken

There should be two springs on the throttle linkage, one of them is probably broken.
This is exactly what happened to my 97. I found one of the two springs broken. This link below shows the diagram of the 2 throttle springs you should have that may be broken. The are #19 and #20. One of these was broken on mine and it fixed my bucking:

KHelfrich, on your 96 there is one large spring hooked to the throttle linkage under the afc housing the other end hooks up near the power steering pump.

After I had the accelorator cable recall done my spring fell off twice my mechanic finally tied it in place. Its been on since then. Yours seems to have fallen off or has broken. ( In 97 they went to a smaller double spring set up. )

There is a smaller spring that is hooked toward the front of linkage and the injection pump. (The larger spring further back and lower was my problem. )

first noticed it being bad after i had put in the injectors and turbo and pushed the plate all the way forward but it was probably touchy before but now with all the power you can feel it a lot more

I have the lower spring you are talking about from the bottom of the throttle lever to by the power steering pump but that is my only spring, other than the one that is like part of the throttle position sensor

I would put a stiffer large spring on.

You can tell it is the large srping if you take your foot off the go pedal and truck keeps steady speed on bumby terrain.

Sounds like governor springs are in need of some fine tuning. Its usually a preference type thing on how guy set them I have seen some tighter and touchy and some loose and easy to drive... ... . Andy

P. S. -The bottom spring on my 215 pump(the one with the two grey plastic ends) broke last year on me and when I got the replacement it was $45 from Dodge. I about fainted when the parts gal told me that.

I discovered the same thing when 1 of mine broke a few years ago. About half that for just 1. But I got mine from Cummins for about 5 or 6 dollars.

The linkage on mine got hard to control also. I removed the control rod (gotta carefully pry it off ) and cleaned & greased the ends & also the linkage "ball" they snap back onto. My problems went away.

does anyone know where i may be able to get the kit in tsb 18-29-97 part number 05011726aa my dealer said that it has been discontinued but I was talking to the young kid that was there and does not like to work so not sure if he was telling the truth

:eek::eek:Got mine from Dodge within the last 12-18 months it was only a few bucks:eek::eek::eek:

Also make sure that the TV lever spring on the transmission is there and hooked up. It's it's missing it will cause those symptoms.

You might want to check to see if the part number for the auto springs is different than the part number for the manual springs.

ok so I loosened my governor springs a half turn each and that fixed my touchy throttle. but when I loosened then each one set seemed to be tighter than the other i had put the springs in when the pump was off the truck and i could easily get to them to measure the distance like they say to do in the instructions, but it seems to me like it would matter more that both sets of springs are tensioned the same more so than the distance they are tightened down from the top
