I'm getting a hollow type metal sound that seems to be coming from the engine compartment. You hear it best in the cab at 50mph still in od. If you let off the gas then give it medium throttle you hear a sound similar to if you rested a screwdriver on a turning shaft. Not grinding or anything horrible. Just enough to think something is going bad. My guess is it might be the fan pulley tensioner. The truck has 116,000 miles. In the driveway in the engine compartment you can't hear it. Any ideas?

2 things come to mind. I just replaced my water pump due to leakage and the shaft bearings were so worn that there was 1/4 " of side play and the impeller was ground down some from contact with the block. My wife mentioned a whinny grindy noise just before that but my hearing is so bad I didnt hear it. The other thing might be drive shaft support bearing.

Jim, there's your problem!!!Oo. Oo. You filled it with gas!:{ :D

hee hee, I agree, gas could be making that noise... ... ..... but you WILL have the cleanest injectors around javascript:smilie('')

roll eyes (sarcastic)

The water pump is one possibility, the alternator is another, I've heard just the sound you describe from one going south.

There was a guy here who posted one when the fan pulley went bad... ... did evil things to his engine. You can lay a mechanics stethoscope on the alternator (the non-turning portion please) and usually find a bad bearing that way.

Good luck.
