My brother has 04. 5 w/6 speed 3. 55 gears. Mods are 90hp II injectors, SB DD3600, ATS 3 piece manifold, Fass & Smarty TNT. He will be hauling 16-18k#. Anyone tow heavy with Silver Bullet?

Just an opinion but my 2004. 5 2wd Auto/Trans has an II SPS66 Phat Shaft and does reasonably well when I pull my 5000 lb pontoon. On the other hand if I hookup my car trailer and put about 8000 lbs behind it I have to be judicious with the throttle otherwise I get the turbo surge/bark when on and off the throttle or when it shifts at lower RPM.

I run either the Smarty S06 POD or the Edge Hot Juice. (Never run them together because the compounded timing could melt the engine. ) I have towed the pontoon with the Smarty set on level 7, (I forgot to back it down), and it did fine just smoked a lot getting it going. I was careful an kept an eye on the EGT's but I could easily let the temps get out of hand on the hills.

I think your combo would have driveability issues with that much weight unless you always keep the engine buzzing as Forrest said. I'm betting that to pull that much weight and still have the power you're looking for then a set of twins would be your only recourse.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Please let us know the outcome.

I'll keep you guys informed. I'm not expecting something good to come out of this by any means. I think his truck will be very hot & smokey myself, but then again I thought my truck would do the same. My 64/71/14 tows like crazy & stays cool. If a 3rd gen really spools faster, he may be fine.

Like Forrest said, just give it some rpm and it'll be fine.

I've got a sps66 and have scaled at 23k and it did great. You just have to stay on top of the turbo with rpm and it'll do fine.

Well, I'm not sure the deal is going to go through for my brother. The guy called & said "I tried all morning, but I can't get this turbo off of the truck". He said that he had a hard time getting it on the truck & now he can't get to some bolts or whatever. I guess he isn't very mechanically inclined? I don't understand it at all.

I had mine out and in in 2 hours. Its not that hard; take the turbo off with the manifold, swap turbo out, and put turbo/manifold back in... really quit easy.

As for towing, hes better off with a manual I think. Hell be able to keep revs up to where its on boost pretty good; an auto would have to wait til it kicks down and spools up. I had one on for 2 or 3 days and it was a laggy SOB. Stock sticks too though

My towing experience with a SPS66 was ok, with rpms up it was a happy turbo and everything was fine. I did run in OD most of the time and that was ok but EGTs were higher than I liked.

I have since upgraded to a Silver Bullet 66 and the difference is a lot more than I expected. It definitely is much harder to spool than the SPS66 was at the same settings. I expected a little difference, but so far the difference in spooling and EGTs are very significant.

I don't think I would attempt to tow heavy with my configuration and the Silver Bullet at this point.
