Hi:

I need to do a favor for a friend, they need a fifth wheel trailer towed from Utah

To eastern Wyoming. It is a 40’ 5er but with my flat bed all I have is gooseneck.

Albeit, a 35000 lbs one and way overbuilt at that.

My truck is an 03 6sp HO with rickson 19. 5 H rated tires 3500 srw, enhanced spring

pack + the overloads and premium brake controller and ex-brake.

This is a one time pull and not for hire, the fact that the owner will cover the fuel

cost as well as maybe an oil change is of little compensation for 3+ days of work

I do not consider as Hiring. I have maybe 150,000 miles of heavy trailer towing

experience and that is why I have been asked to do this.

My question is there a way to, without drilling and mounting a 5th wheel hitch

To use some sort of conversion I can mount to the gooseneck mount to

pull this trailer and anything that can be rented?

Your truck will do just fine, but your friend's 5er my be trashed by using the gooseneck adapter. If you do it, make sure he fully understands the risk and that you are not responsible for any damage to his trailer. If he is really a good friend, you will turn him down.

I don't know what brand your goose hitch is, but B&W makes a 5th wheel hitch that mounts on your hitch. I know there are 2 or 3 other brands out also.

Gooseneck to fiver adapters damage fifth wheel frames, often cracking them to the point of colapse. Please do an on-line search for more info or go to http://www.thedieselstop.com/ for more discussion on these before you do this. My advise is to stay clear of these adapters.

I can see the leverage issue involved, but this is a pretty heavy duty

5er that hasn't been pulled (its an 85 thats been parked for years)

and this is a one time pull to a permanent location).

With a slow pull ONCE is it that dangerous?

Granted I would not use it for consistant use, just once.

A 40' 5th wheel is heavy. This compounds the forces imposed by the gooseneck adapter. As a mechanical engineer, with the information available (none) and the multitude of variables (driving style regarding acceleration and braking, road surface, grades, condition of trailer brakes, etc. ), there's no way that I can say that you will or will not damage the trailer. All I can say is that I wouldn't do it.
