Remove the rear drive shaft if your going to tow dolly it. It can't hurt and its simple to do. Good insurance against any posible damage.

I was thinking about putting a tow bar on the bumper. I checked and it is too wide for my trailer. Has any one tow bared a 3500? It kinda scares me to tow bar it. But I do have another 3500 to pull it.

I tow-barred a 1/2 ton Chevy behind my Dodge gasser from Indiana to Denver, CO. Just make sure and stay away from the dolly's, they are dangerous as hell. Unhook the driveshaft and take your time, it's not too bad.

The owner's manual for my 1995 truck has a section on "Recreational Towing - 4-Wheel Drive Vehicles". It states:

1.

Shift transfer case to 2H and check that the 4WD indicator light goes off. [The indicator light is switched when the front axle disengages. ]

2.

Drive vehicle 10 feet rearward, then 10 feet forward to make sure the front axle is diengaged.

3.

Shift transmission to Neutral.

4.

Turn off the engine with the ignition key in the unlocked OFF position, rather than the LOCK position.

5.

Shift transfer case lever from 2H to N (Neutral) position.

6.

Shift manual transmission into any forward gear or automatic transmission into P (Park).

7.

Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.

WARNING: With the transfer case in N (Neutral) position, the vehicle could roll unexpectedly. The parking brake should always be applied when the driver is not in the vehicle.

CAUTION: Follow the steps given for Recreational Towing to be certain that the transfer case is fully in N (Neutral) and that the axle is completely disengaged before recreational towing to prevent damage to internal parts.

This tells me that you can tow your 4-wheel drive truck with the transfer case in neutral, without damage to your transfer case or axles.

One thing I would suggest is to put some weight in your tow vehicle. Pickups are lite in the rear, and a towed vehicle can push your tow vehicle around.

Remember the truck you are towing is not able to brake.
