I've been looking for a tow package to tow our Jeep Wrangler. It seems that the problem is the round tubular bumper we have on the Jeep. I bought some brackets that were supposed to fit from Roadmaster. They didn’t. They said they were planning on making some to fit… still waiting. Anyone out there conquered this problem. Also, anyone who tows a vehicle, sure would like to hear about the do’s and don’ts you’ve experienced. Thanks.

FLAT TOWING...

A buddy of mine tows a 4WD Dodge Dakota behind his beautiful Monaco Diplomat (8. 3 Cummins, 6sp Allison!) and I always got a kick out of him flat towing (all four wheels on the ground) in park! Yep, he'd leave the transmission in park and put the manual 4WD transfercase lever in neutral. His set up isn't new. The motorhome is but the truck is an 88. It was towed behind his Bounder in this manner for years. Now it's behind a Monaco. No probs and he doesn't incur(sp?) milage on the truck's ODO this way. I think the key is the manual shift lever for the transfercase. I think that's what make his set up possible.

I've seen plenty of Wranglers, Cherokees, and Grand Cherokees flat towed behind motorhomes so I know it's possible! Just don't know how to do it with todays 4WD vehicles with push button 4WD.

Doesn't help much but there ya go!

On the late model jeeps, the oil pump in the transfer case is drive by the rear driveshaft. Putting the case in neutral disconnects the driveshafts from each other and allow them to spin... since the rear spins the oil pump gets driven which lubricates the moving parts so there is no problem.

Hey, CJ Lagos. #ad

As for flat towing a YJ, you can get shackles with pins on them and a tow bar (tow shackles), works really well. Currie sells them for the CJs and YJs.

I have a set of Currie tow shackles and a tow bar for sale! I am located in Wisconsin. PM me if interested.

flat towing isn't nearly as stable as a trailer.

you can also back a trailer up, whereas you need to unhook a flat tow to back any distance.

you should be able to get a decent trailer for your jeep for $1000-1500 and will not regret it.

i just got back from 1100 miles towing my flatfender on a trailer and had no problems. it sure was nice cresting the eastern continental divide at 70 mph.

cheers,

If your anywhere near the PNW Bulldog trailers are well made and cheap. All trailers are made on the premise. The downside is he has a waiting list.

I've seen guys put lockout hubs on the BACK of Jeeps - If you unlock all four, you don't turn either axle.
