What is your engine and transmission technique for towing?

Hey thanks for the tip about using a bright colored ball on a stick to see what's going on with a second trailer. That's a lot cheaper than a camera. I have seen that on some trailers long time ago and wasn't sure what its purpose was.

I think I could see my boat around the 5er also as you state but I'm sure I couldn't see a jet ski or other smaller trailer.

NVR FNSH, isn't the frame on your 5er larger than the frame of your CTD? You wouldn't worry about pulling 4k with your truck with the proper hitch would you?
The frame on my 5er is 12" I-beam. The frame on my '00 2500 is a combo of formed/welded box and open C-channel. Technically, the 5er frame is 'larger' (read taller) BUT not necessarily better suited to handling the loads imposed by towing. I haven't done any kind of structural analysis of either frame. The big difference between the two is that even as cost cutting as DC is the Dodge frame 'looks' much better in terms of fit/finish/weld quality etc. The frame on my 5er looks like the holes and welds were done by blind monkeys using Oxy/Acetylene minus the acetylene. And IMNSHO (see other theads regarding towing way overweight :D ) the structural integrity of the frame on my trailer is better than a lot of them out there - at least the various toyhaulers I looked at.

My take on the travel trailer business - It's not a matter of finding the best built, it's a matter of finding the least shi**ly built.

I'm not an engineer so I may be way off base. To me a frame that supports a vehicle with a GVWR of 13,000 would have to be heavier built than one with a GVWR of 10,500. Also the load is more horizontal than vertical. The key here, I believe, is a properly built and installed hitch assy.
