Wiggley trailer woes...

Since there is so much discussion about towing and GVWR capacities with our trucks, and since Dodge seems to want to make this informaiton hard to find (especially before you buy the truck), I have scanned in the towing charts from the 2001 Towing Guide, and uploaded them to my web site. The links are as follows:

Dave Fritz: If you could put this up on your web site, the information would be available to more people. The book does not seem to be copyrighted.

Thanks

I was talking about this with a friend of mine. I thought my max was around 13000.

Thanks again.

Course if I had training wheels I would be able to haul more. Cept I don't see towing 53,000 in the hear future.

See Ya

Noticed the small number at the top near the max trailer weight column. My truck has a trailer weight of 13,050 lbs but using the GCVW formula it is reduced to 12,250lbs. BTW,I read the new Motor Trend mag article about the new 2002 1500s. They have a max trailer weight of 11,000lbs:confused:

I was looking in the 2002 brochure at the maximum trailer weights for 2500's. Seems like they have upped the rates for automatics by 4100 pounds. I think the AT and 5sp were the same regardless of axle ratio?? Does anyone know why the capacities have increased? I wasn't aware of any major drivetrain upgrades for 2002...

It looks to me like they just left the automatics off the list. They don't show any difference with the V8's either. I can't imagine Dodge wanting to warranty a bunch of automatic transmissions on trucks towing 13,000 lb trailers. There may be some supprised buyers out there who order a truck based on that borchure, and then find out the real numbers after the truck arrives.

klenger -

I kind of thought the same thing, but now I'm wondering if DC didn't just bump it up to help compete with the advertised specs of the Dmax/Allison combo.

In the past, DC has been VERY specific about the towing specs with the various transmission/axle ratio combos. Now, neither the transmission nor the axle ratio appear to have any impact on the towing capacity - pretty much based on engine only.

I have no doubts that a stock auto can pull 13k with no problem, because I was doing it long before I bombed mine and I know there are others out there that have lots of miles on their AT with heavy loads and no problems. Also, the 2001 V10 had a rated towing capacity of about 12,600 pounds with either axle ratio or transmission - much higher than the CTD's ratings of 9,300# for the 3. 55 w/AT or the 11,300# 4. 10 w/AT.

I wonder if the reduced capacity with the CTD 3. 55 in 2001 was because that combination would put more torque to the AT. The V10 doesn't put out as much torque as the CTD (I am assuming this), and with the 4. 10's the RPM's are converted to torque by the rear differental, so the torque to the AT would be less with the 4. 10. I have no idea why they changed it for 2002. Maybe marketing. If so, what does that say for using those numbers with the older trucks? Interesting. If they did change the towing limits with no changes to the truck, it makes you wonder how much the GVWR is under-rated too.
