Towing Co. to Pa.

Hey, I will be leaving June 5 traveling I70 Co. to Pa. Anyone know of any PIA construction I should try n avoid? How about some cheap Diesel fuel? Thanks for the info! If ya see me , flash me! I`ll have a 32` Cardinal TT behind me and a 2 up ATV in the bed. Cya on the road

What part of PA are you heading to? I can tell you that if you are heading east of New Stanton on the PA Turnpike (I-70/I-76), you are in for some of the worst roads I've ever seen here. Basically you will be in and out of construction zones from New Stanton through Bedford on the Pike. The problem is not necessarily the slow down, but the condition of the road in the construction zones. They are rough, narrow, uneven and frankly a little dangerous.

I 70-76 is the oldest and worst turnpike in the US. Cheap fuel in Pa? LOL uhhhh NO. The turnpike does generally have the least expensive fuel in the area. Ill be headed up that way mid July Philly - Pottstown area. Wave at me on the way home.

OH yeah, skip Kansas if you can and get fuel in MO. its a lil cheaper. Then fuel much as ya can before you get to Ohio its high high dollar from Ohio on east. Enjoy Ohio's 60mph speed limit :S

How unsafe are we talking here? I am supposed to head from MI to Virginia across the PA turnpike in a couple weeks. Most likely my buddy with his '04 3500 DRW will be pulling my trail jeep on a 18' trailer. Should we avoid this area like the plague? Not sure how else to get there though.

I the construction zones they push you to the right outer shoulders that happen to have a lean to the right looking down at ravines.

As Yo Hoot said... they have the lanes where the shoulders used to be. So they lean out pretty far. It wouldn't be bad if they were smooth, but the transitions are terribly rough. There is one spot coming down the mountain west bound between Donegal and New Stanton that has been the sight of at least 2 fatal big truck accidents since the beginning of the year. The road shifts from a grade leaning to the right to one leaning to the left. For a passenger car it isn't too bad, but for a heavy big truck, it can be real interesting. After the second accident in the same spot,I think the turnpike commission did some patch work there, but it is still very rough.



I don't think it should not be a problem if you know what to look for. You could take I-68 west from Hagerstown as an alternate. I came up from Richmond 2 weeks ago and I wish I would have.

I knew I could count on you guys! So it sounds as if the old Pa Pike is still the same as last time I drove it in 2000, with NO improvements. You guys are right about the mt. from New Stanton to Somerset... ..... very exciting. Guess that 68 route is sounding good! Justin, I`m heading to the Johnstown area, born there, visit now only! I drove my Jeep to this event last year across this "road. " It was horrible then too. My buddy in an F-150 pulling another Jeep almost flipped the car trailer. There was a drainage ditch in the left lane next to the cement barrier that literally launched the trailer tires on the driver's side into the air. Luckily it landed straight and he got it under control.



Are they ever going to get the PA turnpike fixed, or is this just PA's new version of the 1930's CCC? (Civil Construction Corps)Are they just trying to create jobs or actually fix the road? In Michigan, we just let the roads fall apart and pay people to stay home and collect money.

just drove the PA turnpike yesterday, and i would not like to pull a trailer thru there at all, narrow with jersey barrier on both sides, leans the wrong way in turns, and real rough... even throws a car around a little bit. in the interest of safety, i would go I-68, or stay on the local roads (rt. 30 and rt. 31) and bypass the section of PA turnpike from new stanton to bedford!!

Those roads suck on I-76 but it's nothing to worry about, they just suck. I did it with a 7000# dump bed on my 5000# trailer and 8000# truck in the pouring rain.



Cheapest fuel at any given location is www.flyingj.com. Just print a list of all of their truck stops.

The big hill you pull from Wheeling, WV to the PA state line has some construction on it. It was pinched down to two lanes the last time I went through and they usually have police sitting there.

If you do need to stop for fuel in Kansas, the TOTAL station at the Bunker Hill exit (196 ?) usually has the best price west of Salina. Also, give Yogi Bear a call, and he'll probably meet ya there at the Bear House Cafe for a cup of coffee and bend your ear for a bit.



Yogi has lots of posts in the Members Rigs Spotted - Kansas forum and should be easy to find; but just in case, I'll send him a PM to check this thread.

I went from Erie to New York on the turn Pike and back about two weeks ago with a 25ft. gooseneck and then did I 80 over close to Boston a couple of days later. Just watch your speed and be careful and you'll do just fine. There was some construction on 80 but it was not bad when I went through there. have fun.
