I've been running a "window screen" on my truck for 27,000 miles. Several thousand have been towing. Always have a few degrees variation empty or towing. Never over 200 and mostly aroung 190. Temperature variation is most noticeable during altitude changes. And don't start worrying until the gauge is climbing past 240.

It's much easier to shake those BUGgers lose from the "window screen" than it is to try and pry them out of the fins.

My 99 OE stat is a 180 degree. Later models have a 190 stat. I'm thinkng of going to the hotter stat. Any feedback?

I agree with the fellow who said that you put a load on your truck. I pull a 31 ft 5er and the temp gauge goes to the 0 in 190 and stays there. Emtpy it runs at about the 1 in 190. I think you are on the right track and you must be like me and allot of others (I'm sure) that keep an eye on things like temp, oil pres and other things like females driving in the fast lane. So slowing down is a good thing :D ;)

Just rember bad things can happen real fast if YOU tow to fast. 65 and sometimes 70 is max speed for me when towing, depends on the road, hours on the road and other stuff.

Good Luck

Now something I can talk about...

Towed the 25' TT weighing between 6500 and 7500 lbs a few weeks ago, and finally had the fan come on, at about 220 ! ! !

Was going up a 7% grade in about 85 deg weather.

Since new, the truck temp would climb, even empty. I still need to find time to take it to the dealer to check out the fan clutch.

I switched to the 180 deg thermostat, and it runs cooler around town, but still got hot. Usually on hot days (about 90-100) the truck doesn't take much of a hill to get up to 190.

Need to fix this before I scare the stuff out of the wife again.

She thought we were going to blow up when the idiot light turned on to check the coolant temp.

Jesse.
