question about amp draw from trailer.

Air Bags w/ B & W Hitch

Hey everyone, i have a 2000 wilderness 28ft superslide, and while towing on relatively flat ground my EGT is about 1000f, trans 165f, and water temp normal around 190f on guage, oh also, a constant 10psi boost all this around 60 mph, am i good?

Thanks guys

Oh 5th wheel 9000 gvwr.

Your EGT of 1000 at 60 mph on flat ground seems a little high, but, I have a Lance truck camper. My EGT with similar conditions with my Lance loaded is about 750 if I am not accelerating. Your coolant and trans temps are about what I run.

I think the EGT based on the position of the right foot. I am pulling a 30 foot fifth wheel with an 02 2500 6 speed. at 65 mph on flat ground I seem to maintain 600-1000 depending on how hard I push my foot down. I ran through PA rt 80 up all the hills and never exceeded 1100. my truck is mostly stock, banks brake and exhaust. I was having some trouble in Indiana and had the lift pump changed, before that I could not get the EGT lower then 900.

That seems kind of high. My 5er is about 10,500 lbs wet. No head wind, level road, usually 650 to 800 degrees @ 60-65 mph. Hill climbing( Cajon Pass, I-10E out of Indio, high sierras) I will hit 1000, 1100 if I'm humping it.

I probably shouldnt tow in overdrive, that seems to bring the egt down to 800 degree mark.

And maybe go with a 4 inch exhaust.

There are sooo many variables to consider when towing egt is concerned. I only tow a small 6K utility trailer and see 800* WITH twins. You did not indicate what size tires or what axle ratio you have so I will guess 3. 55's and maybe a size bigger tire. That will easily place even a stock truck to the 1000 to 1100 mark!!!Don't worry about 1000*,go camping and enjoy the trip. A Smarty or some sort of boost fooler and minor timing box will help egt the most... . never over-time the engine while towing. I prefer mechanical mods when towing and do not like 'magic boxes' that over fuel and over time the engine to advertise the highest hp and tq.

I second Alan. I'll see between 800 to 1000 running 17,080 combined at a level 65MPH. Boost varies on terrain and out here in ND, wind, which for some odd reason always seems to be in my nose. Go figure. Interestingly enough, since the installation of the Smarty Jr, my EGTs on a grade will tap the 1200 mark and then recede about 150. I never saw that before the Jr so I am very pleased with the Smarty Jr. That and for some unknown reason, my 48RE has cleaned up its shifts with the JR. I know the Jr doesn't do anything there but I am assuming it has moved the power band to a happier place for the transmission. You guys are way smarter than me, enlighten me.

For the record: when towing straight and level at 65 MPH (17080 GCWR): Boost 10 to 20, EGT 800 to 1000, Rail Pressure (approx) 15,000, Fuel Pressure 16 to 18, Oil Temperature 230, water Temp 190 to 200, oil pressure approx 50 PSI and Trans temp 160 to 190.

The weight of your 5er isn't nearly as important as the drag it creates going down the road. I'm guessing it is alluminum skin with the horizontal ribs across the front. I pull all types of trailers and can tell you that boost/egt is directly related to mileage. I can get the same mileage towing a 13,000 pound fiberglass skinned unit with rounded front and rear caps as I get with a 7000 pound TT with aluminum skin and squared front and rear corners. As others have said, too many variables to compare.
