After seeing some recent threads in regards to members enquiring about upgraded turbos for towing and realizing that I ran 3 different turbo configurations and towing the same weights and trailer, I figured that I would share some mileage results. All mileage figures are hand calculated. TST 1x1 + 90 HP injectors + stock CP3 for all scenarios.

I also offer my "smoke" observations as well my perception of "luggability" such as when traffic slows and then speeds up again and you decide not to down shift and rather let the engine pull you out of the situation or in situations where you're driving in rolling hills and curves.

BD twins:

15,500 lbs gross = 15. 6 mpg

truck and empty car trailer = 15. 6 mpg

level EGT and boost @ 15,500 lbs gross = 850* @ 16-18 psi

6% grade EGT and boost @ 15,500 lbs gross = 900* @ 22-24 psi

smoke: level = nil; 6% grade = nil

luggability 55-75 mph in 6th = Oo.

SPS 62:

15,500 lbs gross = 13. 9-14. 3 mpg

truck and empty car trailer = 14. 5 mpg

level EGT and boost @ 15,500 lbs gross = 1100* @ 8-10 psi

6% grade EGT and boost @ 15,500 lbs gross = 1100* @ 15-17 psi

smoke: level = wispy light trail; 6% grade = nil

luggability 55-75 mph in 6th = :)

SPS 66:

15,500 lbs gross = 12. 8-13. 1 mpg

truck and empty car trailer = 14. 2 mpg

level EGT and boost @ 15,500 lbs gross = 1100* @ 4-6 psi

6% grade EGT and boost @ 15,500 lbs gross = 1100* @ ??? psi

smoke: level = wispy dark trail; 6% grade = haze

luggability 55-75 mph in 6th = :{ :-laf

The results appear to support that the best turbos for towing mileage and performance are the small quick spooling turbos (the top turbo in the BD twins - Super B - is the equivalent of the HTBG 57 mm). If a person didn't want to get twins, then the 62 class single turbo is probably the best all-around compromise for towing and modifications.
