Tongue Weight

Hello,

I had someone meet me the other day to discuss setting up their trucking operation. I was under the initial impression that they were gonna use a lowboy, like the ones my company run, to pull boats from FL to MI and back.

As we talked, it became apparent that they are using a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 to pull a tri-axle homebuilt trailer (guessing about 5,000 lbs) and boats in the neighborhood of 10-12 tons weight.

We are talking grossing 33-40,000 lbs. on a 2500 auto (and they said the trans is acting up).

Evidently they have moved a few boats already. I know the Cummins can handle it, but I feel that they are severly overloaded and I told them so.

Was I right to do that?

Absolutly right. The 2500 with auto & 410 rear end is rated for 18000 lbs thats truck & load. The 2001 3500 dually auto with 410 was only rated fo 19,000. Thats the biggest reason I just traded up to a 2005 dually with a manual 6 speed.
