Advice Requested for Truck Purchase

Camper Jacks

Thank you very much for the advice!

I’ll think long and hard on this one before I try it. In addition to adding anti-sway bars, double checking frame strength, second and separate brake controller.

Everything you guys said makes good sense, thanks again.

The other legal item is you nice the proper drivers license to pull more than one trailer. In California that will be a class A license.

You’re correct; Calif has a non-commercial class A (everything except air brakes). I have an appointment to take the written, and then I’ll need to pass the driving and walk-around tests.

Thanks

Staying legal is very important.

BTW How did you know I’m in CA? Are you familiar with SD County, or close by?

Just my . 02 from hauling with a 40ft gooseneck for a living, putting a heavier landcruiser on a trailer behind a lighter 5'er is not a good thing. What happens when an 18 wheeler is passing on the left, you come out of a valley and get hit with a serious crosswind from the right, some idiot in front of you jams on the brakes for whatever reason and you are reaching for that A/C adjustment?? Imagine coming over a rise on the big road and everyone is stopped 100 yds away, how are you going to shut it down?? Under perfect conditions it is amazing how our equipment performs, and can lull us into a sense of false security, but throw in the unexpected that seems to visit us all on occasion and we must be confident in our ability and the ability of our equipment to avoid potentially fatal consequences.

Please don't think I am trying to be an alarmist. I must constantly remind myself of the limits to continue to operate safely for myself and others that share the road.

Hey Jeff, I grew up in La Puente many years ago before moving north just out of high school. I don't know of any other Fallbrook in the U. S. , so I guessed right. Back in 1980 I had a Dodge truck and a fifth wheel trailer and looked at flat towing a VW Rabbit behind it. A CHP officer and I wen't round and round with the vehicle code book and came to the point that I needed working brakes on the VW, an impossible task at that time. I was working on a traveling construction crew and wanted to make transfers in one trip instead of two. Good luck on your driving test, it's not too bad. My choice nowadays is to have a camper on the truck and tow my woodie on a trailer.

02 2500 SLT standard cab, HO and 6 speed, camper and trailer packages, limited slip,

51 Ford Woodie, mostly stock flathead, 3 speed with overdrive, 11 foot becker longboard,
