I thought I read somewhere that towing was not recomended with Smarty on SW1 but I cant find that now. Was I dreaming or is that true. If so why? SW1 is the fuel saver mode. My truck runs really strong and smooth on sw1 (which I think is odd). Id like to try it when towing lighter loads (5k) with it but I dont want to damage anything by being stupid. Towing heavy I would still use SW5.

I believe it has something to do with to much timing under load(correct me if i"m wrong),PM Bob Wagner for more accurate info. I tow on #3 with mine and all the stuff in my sig. I'll find out on Saturday when i pick up the new fiver if i can tow with the Smarty at all---new rig is 11000LBs and i may have to only tow with the sticks---we"ll see.

Software number One,

The Fuel Saver software. Mpg gains vary, in most cases a + 2Mpg has been reported.

Please notice that the timing in this software is rather aggressive.

HEAVY TOWING is not recommended with this software.

Just communicated by PM with Bob Wagner about this yesterday. He says that towing heavy is after 10,000# but has guys who are towing heavier than that on SW#1. Roll of the dice.

SW#1 has super extra timing so when you add heavy weight and factor in headwinds, extra frontal area (trailer), and terrain the fuel starts pouring in, boost goes up, and the head gasket is at extra risk because of the super extra timing.

I am going to start delivering campers again and like the way SW#1 runs but ultimately am searching for best fuel mileage. Any of the odd # Smarty SW's provide more than enough power and I intend to find out what SW provides the best mpg's without risking the headgasket.

Blacksheepdiesel, When you feel you have the right setting let us know. As soon as I get the Airdog ordered and installed I am loading the truck camper, loading the trailer with the Jeep on and going for a ride... ... .
 
So the SW1 has more timming than SW3? Ive Been towing on SW5 and the engine runs louder making me think it would have more timming. How does more timming risk a head gasket?

Be glad to do so but it will be two or three weeks at least. I am trying to get over pneumonia (from a stinking WRECK!) so the doctor will release me to go back to work. Even then it may take two or three weeks to really try all the settings as I haul a different camper every time, usually not over the same road conditions.

Because the timing is "aggressive", as Marco puts it, the injection event starts more degrees before TDC. This allows more time for the combustion process to start and advance before the piston starts its downward travel. Translated it means "more fire in the hole sooner while the piston is still going up making the hole smaller. " The explosion has to go somewhere, the path of least resistance. Normally this results only in the downward push of the piston, BUT at some point the head gasket cannot hold the extra pressure and it gives up the ghost.

Does that make sense? If not, blame it on my meds.

Yes it makes perfect sense, simply put higher cylinder pressures.
