Cape Cod to Seattle -- Looking for Something to Tow

I can not find any info on towing in 6th gear with the new 06 G56 6 sp. From the article in the recent TDR Reg. , it is a very strong gear box, and they do not make any mention of any towing restrictions.

I will not get the new truck until Saturday, so I have not seen the owners manual yet. Dealer did not know of any problems.

You just do not want to lug the engine,if you can hold 1800 rpms or better you will be fine. I tow in 6th all the time and very rarly need to down shift pulling a hill.

I tow as low as 1400 RPM when the grade is favorable and not accelerating. As your engine breaks in, you will find that you can go lower and lower. You need to update your sig.

I have no idea what my 3500 SRW is rated to tow. When you go to the Dodge site, it shows something like 16250 lbs, but it shows a picture of a dually. the 2500 is rated to tow 13100 with 2wd.

I know it tows my 11,000 lb Titanium great!

Once you tow with the G56 and 3:45's, you will see its the perfect combination!

With the G56 and the way its geared... . I think its a towin machine... ... Rarely ever do i need to drop down a gear unless is super heavy load... .

3. 45s? don't you mean 3. 73s? I thought that was the only gear you could get with the G56.

Thanks for the info guys.

I have been trying to update the signature but have not been able to change any thing. I can get to the profile, but I must be doing someting wrong once I am there.

With the G56 they only come in 3. 73 on the 06'. If you're talking 07' than there's a choice and the G56 is geared slightly different. My 06' 6spd is way better geared than my 96' 5spd 3. 54. I tow in 6th gear all the time. I also avoid lugging the engine.

Why wouldn't you be able to pull it back to the 1600 rpm torque peak?

Exactly. You could be lugging at 1800 rpm, depending on the load. You just have to get a feel for it. What I discovered about low rpm towing is that less throttle is better. There is a huge ramp up in torque from 1500 to 1600 rpm. If you throttle too much at that low an rpm, you'll lug, make smoke and heat, and strain the driveline unnecessarily. Letting the engine pick itself up with light throttle is much easier on everything and almost as fast as trying to over accelerate. Once I learned this technique, I was so much more comfortable and now have a broader rpm range to work with. Oo.

I think I read the definetion of "lugging" in the owners manual. Something about if your RPM is so low that you can't gain speed after a couple seconds of full throttle you need to shift.

I have an 06 with the 6 spd. I have towed in 6th with up to 11k throughh the smokey mountains, the appalachians and through the shannondoah valley with no problems. Been to New York and through Pennsylvania. Seldom do I have to down shift because of lack of power. Sometimse I get behind a semi and will gear down. I have over 21k on the truck in lesss than 10 months.

I just pulled a trailer from PA to Wyoming through Colorado and the only reasons I would need to drop out of 6th was of safe speed or exhaust temps. I found that on hills it pulled the best at 70 mph or 2200 rpms to get the best air flow and lowest exhaust temps. I am glad to have gauges installed on my truck when I had the most boost and lowest temps that was the best gear to be in on the steep grades. most of the time it would pull great in OD but going down hill was a completely different story it needed to be at least 2 gears lower than need to climb the grade to keep from over running the service brakes. I now am a beliver in E-brakes and will have one installed before I hook up the next trailer.

If I am on the interstate I am in 6th with cruise and it pulls fine with slide in listed below and with Jeep on trailer behind. After I have made the mods below this truck tows just awesome. I am 200% saisfied. :-laf

Don't want to hijack OP's thread, but I have a question. I have an NV4500 5 speed, and my understanding is that it's not as strong as the 6 speeds, G56 or NV5600. But towing 8 - 10,000 lbs would I be o. k. to keep it in 5th as long as I'm not lugging.

TIA

Jeff
