I keep reading about people setting their comp to 1x1 for towing. Timing only, delayed fueling!!!

So if sublevel 1 delays fueling over stock (based on boost I believe), and level 3 is at stock, and level 5 is earlier than stock, then why would one not set it to 1x3 for towing.

I installed a non-tapped Comp two years ago and run it at sublevel 3 99. 99 percent of the time. I go to level 5 once in a while to play around, last time was probably a year ago.

BTW

I set it up for

1x1

2x2

3x3

4x4

5x5

So as I adjust the main levels from 1-5, I am effecting only the sublevel setting. NON-Tapped!!!

So if I want sublevel 5, two pushs of the up button and I am there.

Appears they're looking for almost minimum driveline demand (threat). Is also a good way to compensate for bigger sticks. Dealing with stock clutch or juicer, I'd run mine really low as well. Or turn it off--as I have the sticks. ;)

And yep, you got it for untappedness--just use main level for quicker access to sublevels. But then how many folks are running untapped? I never did. :D

I thought about getting a used one, running it untapped with the Smarty / TST to control low boost power.

Call me crazy... .

When I bought my Comp I didn't tap my pump due to transmission concerns. I spoke with Edge a few times to understand how it worked. If the pump is not tapped you are not adding any fuel at all, timing only. The levels 1-5 determine WHEN that timing comes in, higher means earlier timing advance. You could tow on 5 untapped if you want although timing does add pressure also. Untapped your overhead will remain as accurate as it was before. The sub levels don't do anything, they are designed to fine tune the fueling to control smoke.

If the pump wire is tapped then fuel is being added, even in level 1 and it adds more in the upper levels on a rising scale according to the software.

I had the idea of adding a switch in the pump tap wire to have the ability to run in the timing only mode for fuel efficiency, but tapped on 2 or 3 I still get close to 20 MPG so I just leave it on and enjoy the power.

i run mine on 2x1 to keep the smoke from the injectors down while daily driving. if i get on it and turn the comp OFF at low boost situations i will gain a substansial ammount of power.

From Edge's FAQ's

Q: WHAT DO THE SUB-LEVELS AFFECT?

A: The sub-levels affect fueling responsiveness and control the amount of

smoke that is created under low boost conditions, this will be especially

noticeable if other fueling enhancements have been installed.

Sub levels do not effect timing. They effect the stock fueling based on boost levels. So go back and read my original post. Lower numbers delay stock fueling to a higher boost level, higher numbers get stock fueling at lower boost levels. Level 3 is close to stock.

I would think that it would add fueling, but only indirectly via boost fooling.

Snoking, I think the Edge statement is made assuming the pump is tapped. I think that untapped the box adds timing at a set amount no matter what level or sublevel you are on, at least that is what the tech led me to believe. The box is of course designed to add fuel and it is assumed that it will be installed that way. I don't know if the FAQ's on the site refer to an untapped box. Tapped and with fuel added the FAQ is correct. My understanding is (or was) as I stated in my first post from info I got from them. I could of course be wrong and I think it might not be the first time.

The box has a very dramatic effect between tapped and untapped. Correct me if I am wrong but your original post refered to the sublevels affecting fueling. I specifically asked EDGE about that and was told that untapped there is no fueling modification, added, delayed or otherwise. As I stated before, the different levels only affect the point in the throttle where the timing comes in. It is too late to call them now but i can in the morning to see what they say. Thanks for the info.

We are not in mis=agreement. Untapped the Comp adds the same timing at all sublevels. Stock fuel is delayed or done sooner by boost fooling based on sublevels. That is, I can make more smoke on sublevel 5.

Back to the original question. Why do people tow at 1x1 and not 1x3, which is close to fueling at the stock boost settings?

Chris

maybe because they have bigger injectors and want to minimize smoke levels, you should know all about that, or maybe they found that to work best for them. run them how you want i don't really think it makes a difference if one guy runs 1x1 and one guy runs 1x3 if they both are happy why bother?
