Ok this is the first long trip (over 100 miles) that I have taken with my truck towing anything. I was pulling a 5000lb boat between Rolla MO and Springfield MO down I-44. (fairly hilly in parts) With my truck in OD I could hit the bottom of a hill at 85mph and get to the top at 65mph. . is this similar to what everyone else is seeing with thier autos??

Don't know how long or steep the hill was, but you better have those trailer wheel bearings in good shape if you're doing 85 at the bottom.

DTT modifications are just what the doctor ordered when it comes to towing up those hills. #ad

Post some more details.

turbo lcc,
Do you, live in the southern missouri area? I am tring to find a shop in the KC area that can perform the DTT mods.

If there are no symptoms of trans problems, it appears to me that this is about power not the trans.

Any chance you're exceeding 20 PSI on boost and the engine is cutting back on fuel?

Do you have any other mods or boost module?

Charles

Steven, no I live in Owensville Mo, if you don't mind the drive there is a great shop in Union Mo. . Excel Transmissions, (top notch)

Bob, the only mods I have are DTT TC and VB, I am sure this has nothing to do with the trans, I am more concerted that something might be wrong with the might Cummins. .

my setup:
DTT TC & VB, Straight pipe, everything else is stock. (I do have an EZ on the way)

Turbo, I have a 2000 3500 4:10 auto and pull a 24 ft Haulmark trailer with race car--about 8000 lbs. and mine will lose about 10 MPH on a 5% grade thats long--I floor it at the bottom of the hill and about 3/4 up it kicks out of OD and really starts screaming. I beleive it is normal with the stock set up with the engine. Mine is 100% stock engine & trans--I want the upgrades, but can't afford right yet.

Yes thats normal, I tow 4-5k everyday. And before the EZ I would kick it out of od and cruz up the hill at 65 np. Now with the EZ its a whole different world. I can go up 6% grades in od and still gain speed, it still blows me away the power difference.

I got my PE EZ in the mail this evening (Thank Bill K). . I have not pulled anything yet but wow what a difference. I can't wait to try that trip again. DTT VB and TC and EZ... I spoke with PE and they were explaining to me that they thought this was normal, they said that my truck was probably defueling.

Sounds about right...

Unfortunately, you can't just look at weight. A 5K enclosed trailer will pull harder than a 5k flatbed with O say lumber on the back. WIND RESISTANCE!

In case, a boat has substantial mass.

I am planing to purchase a 5th wheel this fall and also have plans to add the DTT transmission mods. How does this mod (alone or in combination with an EZ) affect the MPG?

Steven, I really have not had it all in that long,(both the EZ and DTT TC and VB) but I drive my truck about 200 miles a day to work and today my mileage went up by 1 mpg. But this is the first day I checked it. With just the DTT VB and TC I noticed no difference in mileage, but I tend to do fairly well at about 20mpg (mostly interstate)

Todd T, Thanks that makes me feel a little better, this is my first diesel so I figured I should ask. Gauges are on thier way (Just don't tell the wife :-D)

sounds like you have it worked out now. i just wanted to add my input because i too have made that trip down 44, to rolla and then down 63 to west plains. we haul (6000lbs+/-)firewood every year from down there, and with my 95 12v auto, some of those hills would eat my lunch #ad

even with the 5spd in the new truck, I have been forced into 4th on one hill, south of Rolla, heading north. #ad
its a big one /\ #ad
and if you get caught behind someone and cant get a run, you might as well get out and walk.

the EZ should cure what ails ya, BTW
GET SOME GAUGES on that thing, QUICK. #ad

i have a 99 3500 auto. no matter what i pull, if i can maintain 2100 rpm i lose virtually no mph going up hills... the only problem is 2100 rpm is 75 mph, over the posted limit. if i drop to 2000 rpm then i will lose from 6 to 11 mph going up hills unless i drop out of overdrive... then of course the rpm jumps bigtime... no modifications, all stock... .
