I've not had the opertunity to look at the diff. gears in our trucks as they come from the factory. Although I have re-geared a few and when aftermarket gears are new it does take a little tlc to get them "initailly worn in" to remove the manufacturing coatings(black oxide or whatever). A couple of short trips 10 miles or 15 minute runs then left to cool down. Nothing scientific, but the last time I used my infrared thermometer and the first run got up to about 180 on the diff cover. The nv4500 never broke 100. Two more runs and the diff never broke 100. Went on my way(stayed away from EXTENDED TOWING FOR THE NEXT 500 MILES) . IMO break-in on trans & rears has more to do with avoiding excessive heat than anything else. BTW,have always dropped the diff covers after about 500 and did a wear pattern check/lube change(dino oil until next major fluid change, then synthetic !) My 2 cents.

If someone is having trouble with this, infrared thermometers are pretty cheep now , check for yourself. Proof is in the puddin'. bCrowther is right on the money. Normal driving habits most likely keep the majortiy of applications in the window, passenger and commercial vehicles. Reason for re-replying is maybe some one reading this can check it out. providing a new truck has almost no miles on it when it is picked up. Just a nice to know thing if some one thinks of it.
