flat tow a ctd?

I am looking at Toy HAulers this spring. I, so far, like the Forest River products, Salm/Wildwood/Sandpiper) that are 38 feet or so. I do not want one that is open all the way thru. Do any of you have any experience with any of the 5ver's?? Or anything similar?

Robin

Hello Robin,

I have an 2000 terry 33ft fiver. I like the divider wall, no fumes or worries. Haul my 93 wide glide and love it. My 2

Forest River Products-Salem

I had a new 99 24' Salem Toy Box. I had nothing but problems. Sold it 1 year later.

Problems: Tires rubbed on inner Right fender when loaded. Angle iron used to support fresh water holding tanks broke while sitting in yard. (Snapped the heads off the cheap bolts). Front door leaked. Hooks on wall that are used to hold chairs out of the way pulled out of the wall on trips. Table tops were too heavy for the stowing location. During trips they broke through the panneling that was suppose to suport them. Privacy door for bathroom would jam in the closed position. This was during the first year.

I basically had to rebuild the trailer so it could be used in the matter it was supposed to be made for. All around it was just made real cheap.

I have a forest river serria f26 (30ft overall) fifth wheel it's a 2000 it is open design (no garage). It has been good to me so far and is holding up well. I take it on many back roads and it hasn't rattled apart. I also keep it indoors so that may help it's life.

My father has an 2003 kit (35ft) w/garage and the layout looked good but after using it we found it to hard to move around with just 2 people inside. We have allready cut out one of the cabnets and shortened the dinette 12 inches. also the quality is poor & I have had to fix many problems.

Do a search for Raptor. EricBu12 (I think) recently had a thread going. Looked good, separate garage, nice layout.

beware

beware,

Be careful when loading a toybox . Your local salesperson will tell you that it will haul aprox 3000lbs however, from experience I would not haul more than 1300lbs in the back & remember for every lb you load in the front of your camper you should load 2lbs in the rear toy box . This is assuming that the camper you choose will have axels in front of the rear storage . With that said ,I have a 2000 KZ sportsman and we are very satisfied with its performance,it does have a wall seperating the living quarters from the toxbox .

Robin,

Mine is not a fiver, but is a Wildwood. It's a 1999 and we have had no problems with it. The quality isn't like that of a Weekend Warrior, but it hasn't rattled apart or anything like that. For the purpose of hauling toys to the woods or mountains or wherever, it's perfect for us. A separate garage would really be nice, but that would make it too big for where we go. Good luck with your purchase.

We had a 2002 Sierra 18 footer before I bought my CTD, it was an awesome camper and I kick myself to this day for swithing over to our 04 Weekend Warrior (because of quality problems). The Forest River products are built much stouter based on my personal experience. I'm stuck with this warrior for a long time but if I won the lottery and had some bucks to buy another toy hauler I'd definetly look seriously at the Forest River products.

Robin, check out the Play-Mor toy haulers. They are made in Westphalia, Mo. I saw them at the Louisville RV show, I like the low profile they have. Get in touch with Bowe Gribble, he is in Ks. somewhere, his ph. is 785-453-2403, or cel# 913-940-2113, tell him I told ya to call.

I like the Work & play by Forest river, its a car hauler first, with living qtrs, built more on a commercial std. Not as bling as some of the toy haulers, but it'll outlast them.

I have dutchman 04 32' srv toy box. have had good luck with it. has 2 side outs, 18' awing, room to haul 2 harley's plus all the gear you need. and tool box. been living and travling in it for 5 months know. holding up great. :) good luck in finding a toy box that works for you. Jim

I pulled a Tahoe (built by Thor, Moreno Valley, Ca) 5er toybox from the factory to Las Vegas last week. It was called a 36 ft but I paced it off at 40. Triple axle, separate garage. I was greeted by the dreaded Santa Anna winds from San Bernardino thru the Cajon pass. Even empty it was extremely stable. I have pulled similar size Weekend Warriors and Forest River 5er toyhaulers and this was the best one as far as towing went. I have no experience pulling any of them loaded with toys.

That's because they rate toyhaulers by box size. My 26'FS warrior is really 30' when you throw in the tongue length.

Cajon pass is a lot of fun towing huh :D Sometimes the headwind coming down the canyon is more of a bear than the actual pull up and over the pass.

I am talking about box size, 5ers do not have a tongue. As for the pass, it wasn't the headwind so much as the swirling crosswinds.

I just didn't notice you'd said it was a 5ver, I do know that they don't have tongues but thanks for pointing that out. Yeah and the swirling effect can be brutal through there as well.

I have a '00 Patio Hauler by Kit Mfg - out of Idaho. It's a 36ft 5th with a separate ~10ft garage. It's held up pretty well so far and I don't have any real complaints about the quality. I looked for over a year and finally decided on the Patio Hauler - I'm a mechanical engineer and I'm a bit anal on some things.

The Patio Hauler uses barn doors on the back with two moving van type ramps instead of a drop down wall - I like this a lot better, just seems to be more flexible for loading/unloading of motorcycles/quads.

Let me know if you're looking for a used trailer because I think I'll be trying to sell mine - just not using it as much as we'd like.

I got a 04 sandpiper sport 29 ft open all the way if ya bye one get a wide body trailer cuz mine not and I wished it was I have had a few problems with mine but not to bad of ones love allot better than my tent at the sand dunes

Sandpiper sport 37'

I have an 05 Sandpiper sport with two slides and a divider wall. Its a great unit. I had a problem with the inverter but fixed it myself.

Due to a divorce etc etc, I am currently living in the unit and it is holding up well. Its not designed for full time, but I needed a Place for my Harley and me. . :) temporarily.
