Mercruiser 350 Magnum vs 350 S.O.?

Class A pulling a Dodge Ram

I FINALLY got the cruiser home last weekend when I was finally able to get people, equipment, and weather conditions right. It was quite the task getting her in the garage when she's sitting on 35's and at least a 4" lift SOA.

Once in the garage, my first task was to see how bad the gas was in the tank, since after sitting for 3-4 years I was expecting the worst. After removing the drain plug I noticed the gas wasn't nearly as bad as it could or should have been. I checked the gas cap and found it was un-vented and airtight causing a vacuum to develop while draining the gas. I figured this was the reason behind the gas not being too bad. I removed the cap and drained almost 5 gallons out of the tank. Mind you, I was doing the whole tapping on the tank to try and figure out how much was in there but it's hard to do on a 42 gallon steel tank. Regardless, I only had 1 bucket so I put the plug back in the tank and moved on. No water was seen, and only 1 small fleck of rust on the plug.

I knew we had turned the motor over several times while moving it so I decided to throw a battery in it and see what happens. I took off the air filter cover and grabbed a cupful of that old gas. I knew it would at least fire if it was getting spark. Well, after 30 seconds of cranking, sputtering, and pouring gas in the carb she started up and ran. Granted, she was puking out copious amounts of smoke and soot while she played Frankenstein's monster and came back to life after several stalls and me figuring out the manual choke.

After a few minutes while getting warmed up and things moving again, she smoothed out relatively well considering 3-4 year old gasoline. I got in, backed her out of the garage and took her for a spin around the block. All went well with that except a very touchy throttle and what feels and sounds like a couple of worn out U joints. Needless to say I was pretty happy with getting it running in less than 10 minutes of tinkering.

The next day, I drained the rest of the gas out of the tank, which was about a pint, I started her up again to run the last of the old gas out. I then poured in 5 gallons of fresh gas and put in the new spark plugs. What a difference that made. Throttle response is good, all smoke is gone from the exhaust, and she's running pretty smooth. I'm sure the carb needs some work but I'm not going to worry about that anymore.

After looking around online and seeing the cost of parts for these engines alone, and discussing things with my wife, I am going to do a drivetrain swap. Since I can't find a 4BT that I can afford, I'm going with a Chevy 350 crate motor. I have a friend that says he can get me one for under $1K and he'll supply the carb. I already have a 700R4 and NP208 transfer case I was going to use in the Scout, but it will work much better in the Cruiser with the lower driveshaft angles. One step at a a time, and since the P. O. told me it only got about 8MPG with the I6 Toyota engine, I may do a little better with the 350/auto combo I have. I think a 42 gallon tank should last me a week with this combo. Summit Racing is going to get to know me very well in the next few weeks. Thanks!

Found a 350 with around 2000 miles on it and bought it on my lunch today. Now I get to take it home this afternoon. In the snow and rain. What fun! ;) Oh well. At least I'm on my way to getting the stuff together for the swap. Thank you all for the help and keep the ideas coming.

Mark.

Ok. Now I need your help. I got the engine home, but I need to know what kind of distributor to put in it. I don't know these parts at all. I know I want some sort of electonic system as I don't want to mess with points at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I went to Summit and picked up an HEI distributor for it. The engine I bought is a 4 bolt main, bargain basement GM crate engine. Works for me though as I didn't really want a lot more power, just more than the I6 that's in it.

As soon as I can borrow an engine hoist for a couple of weeks I'm going to pull the stock 2F drivetrain out and get started on the swap. First thing I need to do it get the motor mounts located and set in place so I have enough room for the accessories and plumbing.

As of this past weekend I finally got the 2F drive train out. Good God there's a lot of emissions stuff there! Anyway, I cut out the old motor mounts and welded in the new one's after test fitting and checking distances and everything. Based on the lift and where the new drive train in going, I think my driveline angles are better than stock. It has a double Cardin in the front already that I may keep. I've gotten almost all of the parts together but discovered yesterday while shimming the starter that the flexplate was bent. Another call to Summit today and I should be ready to bolt the trans to the engine in the next couple of days depending on my wife. Once that is done, it's time to fab up a transmission crossmember. I did join IH8MUD and it is a wealth of information.

I would like some help if possible on a couple of areas. First, I still cannot get the HVAC fan to work. I've checked all the relays and fixed a wire (that fixed the intermittent feature) but still nothing. Not really important right now until the rig is running.

The one thing I'm having trouble with is the shift linkage for the NP208 transfer case. It is sitting much farther back than the Toyota case and I'm not sure how to get it to work from inside the truck. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks!! I'll update as time allows. Please email me with any advice or suggestions.

That was a good call on going with the HEI distributer. Mine had a points distributer and I got tired of it leaving me stranded, so I swapped it over to HEI; so much better. My dad gave me his old service manual for his '78 cruiser he bought new (and sold before I was born). It is very detailed and might be of some help on the HVAC stuff; try getting your hands on one.

Forrest

Thanks Forrest. I just haven't taken the time to purchase one yet but they are available. I didn't want to be stranded either, but my motivation was so that I didn't have to worry about points at all.

I have a delay now that I found out the torque converter for the trans I have doesn't fit the crankshaft pocket. I don't know what to do about it yet.

I'm asking the group for some help again on a couple of things.

1. Heater hose routing. I have no idea where the darn supply and return hoses go into the firewall OR on the engine. There's a large plug on the left side of the thermostat housing and a smaller one on the right as you are looking at it from the front of the engine. Are these the supply and return to the engine?

Also, the supply and return through the firewall of the FJ60? I'm pretty sure the supply is on the passenger side firewall since that is where the piping for the rear heat and I'm pretty sure the valve for the rear heat is that one.

2. Radiator hoses. I have an upper that fits well and will only need minor trimming to fit perfectly. The lower hose, however, is a different story. It's a much smaller diameter than the Chevy pump outlet and I haven't found anything that will work yet. Any ideas here?

3. Drivelines. I'm not sure what to do here since the 700R4 is straight out the back and the rear axle is offset to the passenger side. Plus, it's much shorter than the original Toyota axle, so should I go with a double Cardin type or try to find a center axle housing? I really don't have much time as the new baby is coming probably this Thursday and my free time will be almost completely gone.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Work Stoppage. My new baby is coming today. My wife is on her way to Labor & Delivery now so I won't be working on the Cruiser for a while. Wish us luck!

What are you going to do with the old powertrain? I would hate to see a good inline 6 engine tossed away. Do you have the engine/transmission/transfer case complete?

I am selling the old powertrain CHEAP! It is complete, including all the smog stuff, alternator, and PS pump. The only thing I'm not letting go is the transmission cross-member. If you want it let me know. I even have a brand new Centerforce clutch kit that's going with it.

If you figure out a good place to mount a car seat in the cruiser let me know... cant convince my wife that its ok to just hold our two week old in her lap while wheelin'

That is going to come a little later on once I get the rest of the mechanical stuff worked out. I think that I'm going to find some seats from a later model something that have the LATCH system build into the seat frames. Maybe I can take them out of our Pathfinder and they will fit? ;) It is now running and seems to be working good. I have some cooling and transmission issues to work out, then get driveshafts made up, but I'm close to being done with the swap.

As for the old 2F drivetrain, I traded a guy locally for 3/4 ton axles he had under his FJ55 and his TH350/NP205. If I don't use the axles under my FJ60, which I may do, the parts will get used on my Scout.
