I have a dilemma, I am about to go on a 2000+ mile round trip. The BFG's that I currently have are getting thin enough that I want to replace them before the trip. I really want the Toyo m/t's in a 35 12. 5 r 17, but have been told by the local tire dealer thet there are none in the US and will take months to get here (I have a set on order). The dealer does have a set of the 37 13. 5 r17's in stock (I can have them tomorrow) for a dollar more per tire. I know they will rub some with my current setup but how bad will they rub? How much will they hurt my mileage?

How about towing ability, My BFG's are rated @ 3000 lbs a tire and squirm pretty bad with a trailer, the Toyo's are rated @ 4300 lbs ea. will they be better or worse than the BFG's. Finally The truck might be borderline for a 5th wheel or gooseneck with the 35's, will the 37's rule out towing anything but a tag trailer?

any help would be appreciated;

James

I faced the same problem, and I wish I had more info, but I don't. I had a hard time getting any meaninful info about the performance hit of 37s with 4. 10s. With my stock power level I was concerned. Those Toyos are E rated as opposed to the (I think)D rated BFGs, so if you belive the manufacturer's ratings they should be more stable . . .

Not knowing what 37s would do to me, I went with E rated 35x12. 50r17 Hankook MTs. They look cool, and if they are a mistake, at least they are much less expensive than Toyos. I have low miles on them, and no towing, but they balanced well enough (10oz on one tire, with less on the rest).

I had the Toyo's on my F-350. They were awsome for towing. One of the best biggest Mud Terrains to tow on. They are great tires for 1 ton trucks and ever better for 3/4. If you are worried about rubbing, just get some wheel adapters and stick them out a little more... that would fix your rubbing issues right up. As far as mileage, I am sure you would lose a little... exp. if you went with the bigger tire and more backspacing. But in my opinion, it would be worth it.

I also just saw that new Nitto I think it is... the Dune Grappler they're calling it... looks pretty bad ***. But I dunno how well it would do on larger trucks and towing applications. But it's worth checking out. http://nittotire.com/tires_dunegrappler.asp

Thanks for the opinions, The Nitto's are out being they are not E range tires. As to the rubbing issues, it looks like they will rub on the control arms (not an issue for me, the 35's do too) but I am not sure about the fenderwells (will rub on the mudflaps static not sure about with the suspension compressed) and spacers will only make them rub the 'wells worse. I just don't want them to tear the tires or fenders up.

Toyo M/T vs. A/T

What do you think of the A/Ts I was contemplating a set, love the look of the M/Ts... though.

tire life, ride?

I just put on the 35/1250/17 toyo oc m/t's that I got from Les Scwab in Sunnyside, WA. They problably stil have some. I bought mine from them a week ago. ~$1300 picked up from store.
