Ok fellow members, the Kore Recon system is on now,(would of love to go with the chase but i went with the DT Profab longer control arms aswell-finally arrived,---yet to be installed, maybe tomorrow---). I am not going to be towing as much now cause i've parked the rv at the lake for good, maybe once a year i will tow it to a different place or a change of scenery but me and the mrs really like where we have it now. SORRY back to the question,i'm eyeing the Toyo's open country in 315/75/r16 for my ride and want to know if i shoud go with the All-Terrain or Mud-Terrain,Just want some honest feedback for someone that has run these tires---both or only one kind. I'm a little hesitant to go with the mudder cause i had some BFG's for a jeep i ran 15 years ago and mind you they were great for what they were intended for but on packed snow/ice they sucked :(. I will not be bogging with the truck, mostly gravel roads for hunting etc,but the snow can really fall where i go ,depends on mother nature as well. Lots of oil service guys trucks seem to be running the mudders, lots around on 3rd genners, but i'v only seen one with the A/T. Comments/suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated---Thanks David :D :D :D

It would probably depend on what you are going to be driving on the most, hiway or gravel. The MT stands up to the gravel really well and surprisingly is good on ice and snow. Were as the AT is better on the hiway, being quieter and have better traction on the ice and hard pack. Personally I think the MT's are the way to go but then half of my driving is on gravel.

I had the M55 Toyo's also on my last pickup and love them, got 70,000km and still had over 50% tread left before I sold the truck and most of that driving was on northern Saskabush gravel roads.

If you find a good deal on tire's let me know I am in the market also, just the price's are out of this world and hard to get in Drayton.

Dave I believe we met at the Ikea parking lot waiting for the start to the truck parade to Cook County Saloon after the AAB races. I have to say you have sweet looking truck.

How do you like the suspension?

Thanks JLabossiere, for the suggestions/comments,and yes i remember you and your ride. i want the mudders---decisions,decisions,decisions :-laf . i found a good price on line(www.carmodifier.com) in Canada here, they are the cheapest to ship right to your door so far,all the tire place are around here are $350+tax etc. A complete set of 5 M/T shipped is around($280a tire) $1550 with tax but it will be around $75 more to mount/stems/balance etc(A/T's are 200+more form the same place). Yes,love the Recon setup so far, wish i could afford the Fox shock/Chase at the time, but i might upgrade next year. Me and the Mrs just had our 10 year anniversary, that was her gift to me,she got another ring she has been hinting about for the last 3 years---(she a knuckle dragger now with all the weight/carrots she has hanging off those fingers :D :D :D ). As well the wife would like a 3rd genner now(3500 single/4door,4x4,loaded with some goodies like mine--OUCH,got to stop bringing here to the diesel drags/shows :-laf. Keep in touch and let me know if you decide to go with carmodifier or not,got to sell my Mach 1. 5 before i buy. Later David. PS next up after the tires are Road Armour bumpers, front and rear.

Thanks for the heads up on that site!! M/Ts for my truck are $70 cheaper per then at home here. :) Glad you like your suspension, I liking mine more all of the time also.

Congratulations on your anniversary! I remember your wife talking to mine about diamonds. . (mine is a knuckle dragger also :-laf. ) Like a raven, if it's shiny they want to take it home.

Hey DWeiler. .

I have the Toyo MT's on my '02 and love them - great tire - very quiet and handle our roads fine. . Plus they look sharp as hell. Especially on some Walker Evans Rims. .

Later

SWells, thanks for the advice,i'll be mounting them on my Motto's MT 700 rims,I will still have my BFG's 285 to fall back on if needed(stock rims),but i think the 35's will only compliment my ride even more with the Kore Recon on now. As i said earlier i was going to shy away from the mudders from past experiences :( ,but that was 15+ years ago when i ran the BFG M/T's on my jeep so maybe there have been an inprovement---never bought Toyo's before either,Since then its been BFG's A/T on all my rides. Thanks Again--- David

Toyo is quickly becoming the tire of choice in the northern Alberta oilpatch where extremely harsh mud, sand, gravel, snow, etc. are the norm (as well crazy hills, offsets, and ruts that'll swallow an axle whole). The Geolander has held that title for quite a few years now but the Open Country's are just so much better. A/Ts are excellent on snow, ice, gravel, highway (very low noise) and very good in mud. They wear excellent (I abused mine through 80,000kms, including NUMEROUS smokers), and are my all-time fav. The mud terrains look wild, are excellent in mud, slush, and gravel, and very good in snow and pavement (but more noise) and surprisingly great on ice. They wear a little faster than the A/Ts but a great tire if you want the extra aggressive treads. One thing the Open Coutnries have over ALL other passenger vehicle tires (the big rig tires are the only other tires that have this) is ground walnut shell compound added into the rubber. This allows these tires to grip much better than other tires on ice, since the walnut shells do not wear off but chunks slowly break off always leaving a rough surface to grip the ice when needed. As I said, only bug rig off road tires also have this.

You really can't go wrong either way (unless your short on cash). Personally I'd go with the A/Ts myself.

Thanks pourinthecoal, I was thinking of the M/T until you mention 80,000km, mud and gravel. Now I'm back to having my reasonable side debating with burn or bust side. But at least I learnt something new also with tires being made with walnut shells.

Cool, Thanks pourinthecoal for the great info/update/advice,now i have to think about this somemore. I really don't drive the truck much, except for when i need a truck or 4x4(bad winter/road conditions,HUNTING/hauling/towing stuff once and a while)heck i had this truck for 5 years and only has 31000KMS on it. When i do need the truck i want best tire(s)to get me though most of the mud and whatever i come across-no bogging but i have had it close to needing a pull with the BFG'sA/T. . Still thinking, still thinking, see the smoke rise and it not from my Cummins. Thanks DW. :-laf :-laf :-laf

I'm the exception.....

I actually got quite a bit better life out of my BFG MT's than I am getting out of my Toyo MT's. The 3 sets of BFG's that I ran averaged around 50000 km-the Toyos are not going to make 40 I don't believe. I'm a contract operator so I see mainly gravel-the run I make now involves around an average of 50 km/day of pavement and the balance is gravel. Truck weighs in over 8000 lbs. with all my crap and a full load of fuel. Only difference in setup between the BFG's and Toyos is the BFG's were on the factory 16" wheels and the Toyos are on a takeoff set of alloys from the new gen trucks (sick of cracking the factory 16's)-shouldn't make a difference to wear. Both were/are 35" (315/75R16 vs 35-12. 5R17).

Running this size of tire and wanting to have an aggressive tread pattern limits your choices pretty drastically-as of last year when I was looking excluding the exotics like Interco etc. I could only find a mud pattern in the 35-12. 5R17 in Cooper, BFG or Toyo. I will probably lean back towards the BFGs for the next set unless I find a screaming deal on the Toyos.

On a semi-related note, anyone know anyone who is running the Cooper Discoverer STT's? I almost tried a set when I got my Toyos-curious if anyone is running them on gravel and how they are wearing... .

Thanks

Jason

UPDATE----bit the bullet and went with the M/t for now,tax/shipping to my door/cost was just over 300. 00Canadian a tire,A friend will mount and balance for cheap later on. Need an alignment to i guess cause i'm installing my Dt Profab longer control arms too. Truck is sitting apart right now due to wrong crush sleeves sent to me :( :( :( ,now waiting for the proper ones to arrive then i can mount these new skins and see how they do----just intime for some backroad driving for hunting season. thanks for the advice/input everone. LaterDW

I think you will like them-and that is a really good price-I thought I did good on mine at the time and it was more than that..... I am going to have to check that place out when the time comes to replace mine. I have a takeoff set of cheapo 35x12. 5R17's that I bought when it looked like these were going to be backordered and I was going to need tires-I will put them on to burn off after these are done unless we get a ton of snow over the winter in which case all bets are off!

They are surprisingly quiet for a mud terrain tire and grip well-I just wish they would have worn a little better for me. Guess the BFG's spoiled me-never thought I would say that... .

Jason

JHasen,i got the last 4 he had in my size for now,i had wanted 5 of them(full size good spare)to rotate though with the rest of the tires---they said they will call me when the extra tire comes in,if not i may have to find a used one for now or just go with the 4 and no extra rotation with the spare. So far that place is about 100. 00+ cheaper than what i was quoted here and they list the prices on line. Hope this helps down the road when your time comes for new skins. :D DW

Stay well away from the Cooper tires!!! I had the opportunity at a local Les Schwab(tire retailer) and the Toyo's are by far superior. A friend of mine that worked there had me specifically check the sidewall. The Coopers have a sidewall that is paper thin compared to the Toyo MT's. I've had my MT's on since around April or so, and I have been extremely impressed. I just recently bought a 5th wheel that weighs in around 13k when fully loaded. I've got 75psi in all tires, and they don't even flex. They're a little noisy, but compared to other mud terrains, they are much quieter. I haven't actually used them for mudding(as the mud will tear up the truck), but in the dry dirt, they work great. Snow is coming soon, so I'll get the chance to see how they 4x4 in the snow. I think that they are rated to 3750 pounds per tire for payload, so they can handle a very high amount of weight. Another test of how good this tire is, look how many stock and modified off-road racing trucks are starting to use them. You cannot, and I mean cannot, go wrong when buying this tire.
