one less thing to worry about....

internet

My 91 r-runner is having problems getting into 4th gear. It feels like it goes halfway in. The clutch seems fine, no slipping. The other gears seem fine. Any transmission people out there have an idea of what to look for. Big $$$$$$ for a new or rebuilt transmission.

Most good shops will do a road test and diagnosis free of charge, which is your best bet. If you want to check some things yourself try these. Check all the mounts, including, Motor, Trans, transfercase, and crossmember. See if anything is shifted out of place, of if something is stopping the shifter from moving to the full posision. How many miles are on the vehicle? It does sound like the shift fork inside the trans. is worn out. If you ever see one they are a little piece of alum. and do get worn down. It could also be the schronizers(sp?). My sugestion would take it to a good shop and have them road test it. It is also good to use the same mechanic, or shop, because we get to know the vehicles and owners and that helps out so much. We know what is "normal" for the vehicle and become friends with the owner.

My 2 cents.

After searching the internet for hours, I found a Toyota website that gave me the answer to my question. There is a Shift lever bushing and seat at the end of the shift lever where it attaches to the transmission. Took 15minutes to fix. Took it apart and found that the seat which is a rubber seal disintegrated. Cleaned it up, replaced it, and all is well. If you have a toyota with a stick shift and you have over 70 or 80k miles on it, I suggest replacing this before it gets bad. $15 and 20 minutes is all you need.
