'80'sl Jeep Cherokee/Renault Turbo Diesel

I'm in Trinidad and Tobago for work and have discovered some really cool trucks here. Toyota, Nissan and Kia have some nice diesel trucks here that are quite impressive. The Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser trucks are really neat. They have 4 and 6 cylinder turbo diesels that are quiet, powerful and efficient. The locals love them here because fuel is about . 40 cents US per gallon and the jap-trap diesels last forever. I showed them some pics and specs on my trucks and they are blown away at the power level differences between Asian and US trucks. If only Toyota would import the Hilux and Land Cruiser model trucks in the US? Does anyone else have experience with these rigs?

My friend rented one in Nicaragua. He loved it. Diesel is $5. 00 US/gallon. Apparently Nicaragua and Hugo Chavez aren't hitting it off to good.

Too many EPA restrictions to bring these trucks to the US and California. The gov't doesn't care and wait 'til Obama is in the White House - - Did anybody look to prodce crude in the US when it was $145. 00/bbl? HE-- NO! We're gonna' look at these as the "Good Old Days" Mark your calendars and remember what I'm saying. $5. 00 fuel will be back before we know it

If I remember correctly the Toyota Hilux was imported to the U. S. in the early to mid

70's. It was a small truck on par with the old Datsun pickups. Toyota Land cruser pickups were never very popular in the U. S. but are sought after these days, Wish I had one:)

One of the guys here at the local shop has a hilux and another has a mazda that is naturally aspirated. I'll get some pics tomorrow and post them. I don't know why in the hell they wouldn't meet emissions? They are computer controlled common rail diesel. I would think the only thing they would need to pass would be a DPF.

Well i will stay with my DODGE!! I will not buy a Jap car or truck Those SB killed some of my family. I thank we should try to keep are money here. If we don't we will end up beaning a 4 world country.

The Hilux they market here is sized in between a Tundra and a Tacoma. It's definitely got more interior space than Tacoma's. I'm 6'2" and fit pretty well in these trucks. The power is impressive too. I should have some pics tomorrow. Blackbear, do you ride a Harley too? :-laf

I know how you feel blackbear. I was living in the Philippines with my parents when the Japs invaded. I was 13 and the turmoil and destruction not only in property but what really counts, personal lives and disruption of families can't be described in words, You had to be there. After years of recovering from personal loss and illness the family was again intact and grateful to be alive. It took me 50 years to buy a Jap car. I figured after 50 years their grand children built it. I bought it because our domestics are junk. If my Dodge did not have a Diesel I would not have it.

I suppose that if we insisted upon hating and not buying products from every nation we've fought on a major basis because of the death and destruction they inflicted upon us (and we them!), we'd have to hate:

American indians

Great Brittain

Germany

Italy

Japan

Mexico

Korea

Various lesser Asian and European nations/groups

Vague Midde eastern nations like Iraq, Iran and similar, for their terrorist involvement of the 9/11 type.

There are others as well - but it should be obvious that continued and extended hatred of all those, and more - who have damaged us and our nation in the past or present, is neither practical or even likely possible in terms of avoidance of even buying and owning items with roots in those countries...

Gary your point is well taken. I try not to hate, so I HOPE I am hating what they did and not them. We are at a point in time that the Global complex of businesses does not give us much choice. We are at the point that if we refuse to buy because of who made it we would be cutting of our nose to spite our face.

Here are some pics of a 2004 Nissan Frontier with a 4 cyl turbo diesel. I got to drive it and man it's zippy. He's getting about 22 mpg with all city driving. Not bad considering all the crap hanging off of the engine.

FYI, it's not intercooled. I should have the pics of the Hilux tomorrow for anyone that's interested. I made a video of the little Nissan running and it is fairly quiet, especially as speed.

If things are the same there that they were 20 years ago, those trucks are made there. Very few vehicles were imported.

My parents were missionaries there from '90-'95. I got to visit them once. Do they still have the "pluck and gut's" at the big intersections? It's a beautiful and ugly, very poor and very rich place.

:-laf:-lafMost of these trucks are manufactured in South America. I don't believe anything is actually manufactured here accept for drums any more. You can get anything you want in this place fairly cheaply as long as it's not a can opener. I searched for one for two freakin days till I found one. Trinidad is relatively poor but does certainly have some rich areas. I'm living in one of the so-called rich areas right now and it wouldn't classify as doodly-sqaut where I live in Alaska. Dry with A/C though so I can't really complain.

YUP - I was agreeing with you and your position. Long-term hatred can be a very self-destructive and consuming thing. Being aware of and sensitive to circumstances and issues can be a necessary part of life - as long as perspective and control are applied...

Trinidad dimes.

Everytime you watch National Geographic all you see are diesels of all makes all over the world. Supposedly they are 3rd world countries? Sounds like we're behind the times.
