Kubota engine life span question

While I was test driving a Tundra with my dad tonite, a 2nd gen 3500 pulled up next to us at a red light. I said, "oooo... cummins, nice. " The salesman commented that cummins is being pushed off "the totem pole". I asked how is that. He started comparing towing capacity and power. I fired back with "they (chevy, dodge, ford) can all tow but a cummins will have a better chance of getting you to your destination. " He got quiet after that.

So far I know of a few duramax owners that have had problems, and a few powerjoke owners that have had major problems. A buddy of mine has a 7. 3 and is on is 5th transmission. My cousin is on his 3rd turbo in 27,000 miles on is 6. 0!

I have 156,000 miles on my modified cummins and still going strong. :D

LOL

156,000 miles on a Cummins? It's still an infant. :-laf

"Most" of my gasser loving friends have to trade off their truck at 100,000. One fellow recently has gone through THREE GMC 350 engines in his truck alone. It's simply a daily driver.

I can't get them to understand that they only need one Dodge. But they don't like Dodge

I wasnt a huge Dodge fan myself, til I got in a Cummins truck and drove one. Then I was hooked on the inline 6 and its longevity. I get so shocked at the relatively low miles when anything else wears out. My g/f talkes about her mom's car having a lot of miles at 120K (97 Grand Prix). I have had 4 Dodges with 200K+; 1 that topped 300K, and one that supposedly had 440K (odo showed 190K), and they all ran great. None stayed stock real long.

My 01 now has 88,000 easy miles on it. However I've noticed lately that it seems to run better than it ever has, snappier, more power. The motor's bone stock. Could it be that it's finally breaking in? Seems like a lot of miles for that. Maybe it's the oil, I switched from Valvoline premium blue to Mobile syn.

Remember when T100 was the best full size pickup in america

Toyota has a great small pickup ,but that is it. I remember the adds would claim the T100 was the best full size pickup in america and they would show it towing a small boat up a grade passing all brands, OH my bad that was a Tundra (same truck bigger engine) and actually had buyers for the POS. I own a Tacoma so I can talk smack, it actually pulled my Blown Bonus (see sig) and did a great job of it when I was pulling the 5ver with my CTD and needed another tow vehicle, but was cautious all the way. The Toyota trucks are now built in Texas because the Japs want you to believe, that if they are built in americas truck capital they must be better. Even if they go to Diesel there trucks are inferior to the CTD, just look at there first attempt with the D-max, OH my bad its GM.

We will have to see about the new 'yota truck, it might be nice. This looks like it's going to be what I call a heavy half. Like the new F150 and titan, they are overstressed 1/2 tonners with imaginary GVW's.

I was looking at a recent Consumer Reports whilst waiting for a replacement cup of coffee (WON'T STAND PAYING A PREMIUM PRICE FOR A WEAK CUP OF MUD  - but thats another story ;) )

The Dodge Ram w/ diesel was rated very high for reliability, the Cheby diesel was some where in the middle with a negative rating, and at the very very bottom way negative was the Ferd Pstroke - so sad ;)

If I was looking at a gasser I'd would consider a Toy. But the one I had was such a tinny piece of junk. Albeit, it was a dream to rebuild because of the room and engineering.

Why do we even care what a Toyota sales person says about a Dodge, remember his job is to sell Toyotas. We just bought a 2007 Camry Hybrid 3 months ago and I'll say the Toyota buying experience (Lassen Toyota (Albany, OR) and service after the sale was way better then what I got at my local Dodge (Whitnell Dodge)or Ford (Skyline Ford) dealerships. We currently own a 2000 Ford Excursion and of course a 2005 Dodge Ram so I have experienced many dealerships and I'll tell ya if Toyota comes out with a heavy duty diesel I'll go test drive it.

Perhaps his brother or nephew manages a school bus garage ... ... ... ... ... and many of the buses are powered with the 1999-2004 24 valve ISB... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . :-{} ;)

I'm just saying.

i believe you are correct there. both of the cummins i have had ''broke in'' at about 80000 miles. they started getting better fuel mileage and like you said, got a little more snap and power.

I belive the US has import duties on vehicles above a certain GVW making it prohibitave to importing them, so they set-up shop and start building them here instead. As for the others, I have a friend with a 2004 Chevy, allison, who is still jelous of my 97 cummins running stock, and used both to pull loads for comparison. Oh well to bad, he was looking for a CTD when he found this one and thought he should get it because his father worked fo GM, I only care who can pull the load the best.

Well if importing is a no no on GVW then it must be more than the Dodge. Its built in Mexico.

I would like it very much if Toyota built a light duty half ton with great fuel mileage. I only pull a boat. I would love to get 20 plus mpg on the highway with boat in tow.

I believe I heard somewhere that Dodge 1500's are to get smaller Cummins engines in the near future and would not dought it if you see it in a toyota. I would rather have a mex CTD than a jap/american wantabe.
